Poolside Education

Article Image Alt Text

National Night Out is far from the only community event in which the police department has participated in this summer.

Twice last month, the Livingston Municipal Alliance Committee, in partnership with the Livingston Community Policing division, have hosted special events that sought to bring the community together for some fun and a little information.

Both took place at the Haines pool, on July 18 and 25, and were open to all, not just to members of the pool.

National Night Out

Next Tuesday,August 6, Livingston’s annual National Night Out will return to the Oval, celebrating the police-community partnership we are so fortunate to enjoy here in town. The event also aims to increase awareness of crime and drug prevention, strengthen town spirit, and send a message to criminals that Livingston is a united and vigilant community.

National Night Out, sponsored by the Livingston Police Department, offers an opportunity for residents, young and old, to come together as neighbors. Nationally, the event has been held annually since 1984, and is always held on the first Tuesday in August.

LPI Director Urges Contributors To Take Advantage of Summer Sales

Article Image Alt Text

“If You See Something, Buy Something:”

Livingston Philanthropies, Inc. (LPI), Livingston’s local non-profit organization, has a mission of “providing for the poor, homeless, and disenfranchised,” and LPI founder and director Jeff Friedman has urged contributors to take advantage of summer sales for the charity’s “Personal Shopping for the Homeless” initiative.

“This time of year, we are exposed to a barrage of sale ads on a daily basis,” said Friedman. “Summer close-out sales, back-to-school bargains, online special offers, two-for-one purchases, email specials, newspaper pull-out sections, and so much more. These wonderful sale opportunities exist right now both in stores and online. That’s why LPI is asking Livingston residents to join our ‘Personal Shopping for the Homeless’efforts while sale opportunities are so rampant.”

Trio Arrested for Car Thefts, Burglaries

Three Newark residents were arrested by Livingston Police last week after an alert resident caught them trying to enter his vehicles.

At about 10:20 p.m. on Thursday, July 25, a Sheffield Court resident called the police to report that three people had just tried to enter three vehicles in his driveway. All of the vehicles were secure, so the suspects fled empty handed and returned to their vehicle.

Responding officers soon located a 2004 Chevy Malibu with three male occupants on Thames Drive and conducted a motor vehicle stop.

Helmet Rewards Program a Success

Article Image Alt Text

The Livingston Police Department’s “bike helmet rewards program” this summer has been a huge success, reports the Community Policing Unit. In June, the LPD received a Traffic Safety Mini Grant of $500 from Atlantic Health Injury Prevention. State law requires any bicycle rider or passenger under the age of 17 to wear a bike helmet. To help encourage youngsters to wear their bike helmets, police officers have been handing out vouchers for a free pretzel and frozen lemonade at the Philly Pretzel store in Livingston to all young bike riders they see wearing their helmets. The initiative, which will run through September 30, was spearheaded by Lt. Reese Riley. Shown here, Community Policing Unit Officers Kevin Mullaney and Joy Klapal present a voucher to Livingston resident Taylor Altomare. Officers expect to hand out all 500 of the vouchers they have.
