At the January 28 Board of Educationmeeting, interimsuperintendentof schools James O’Neill said he would “address something that I would not have addressed [about an article in the news] some weeks ago.”

O’Neill was referring to a letter to the editor in last week’s edition of the Tribune, which was a response to a December 27 article about a swastika symbol found drawn on a classroom desk at Heritage Middle School. The district confirmed that the symbol had been found on November 29. The letter, published in the January 24 edition, was submitted by Claudia and Brandon Minde.

“I was really disturbed,” O’Neill said.

Council Defers Vote on 5th Member To Livingston Democratic Committee

While some in attendance at the Monday, January 28, Township Council meeting were hoping to hear who the Council had selected to fill Michael Silverman’s vacant seat, they will have to wait a little longer.

After meeting in a closed session prior to the start of the open meetings, the Council did not reach a decision on who among Scott Goldman, Laurie Kahn, and Michael Vieira will be named the next Council member. Later, in the open meeting, no Council member made a request for a proposed resolution, nor did any council member ask the mayor for a motion to nominate one of the candidates.

The Council has instead decided to throw the vote back to the Livingston Democratic Committee, which selected the three nominees earlier this month.

Livingston volunteer firefighters did not have to go far – just across the street – to extinguish a fire behind the strip mall at 45 South Livingston Avenue. Firefighters responded to a report of cardboard in a recycling bin on fire, and arrived to find the fencedin area completely engulfed in flames. The fire was promptly extinguished, with no injuries reported.

The Fire Department responded to two other reports of possible fires. On Tuesday, January 22, a passing motorist reported flames coming from the chimney of a home at 257 North Livingston Avenue. There was no house fire, however; fire officials checked the house and discovered the homeowner was using the fireplace.

Shutdown But Not Out

For federal workers residing in Livingston, or anywhere in the United States for that matter, it has been a weird and difficult month to say the least. As the government shutdown extends past the 30-day mark, the bank accounts of furloughed employees, some of whom live in town, are being stretched thinner and thinner. After all, even those of us lucky to have a comfortable cushion of savings would likely feel the pressure of two missed paychecks.

Michael Vieira, Laurie Kahn, and Scott Goldman are the three nominees, and the Council is now tasked with selecting one to serve until a general election can take place in November. We expect them to read the candidates’ cover letters and resumes, as well as learn more about them through interviews.

Long Jumpers Shine at Armory Competition

Article Image Alt Text

With much of the Livingston High School track and field team remaining behind in Livingston to prepare for the upcoming State Relays, the Livingston long jumpers and many of the team’s newer athletes traveled into New York City to compete at the New Balance Track and Field Center at the Armory. The venue is considered by many in the sport as having the fastest indoor surface in the world. The center played host to hundreds of New Jersey high school runners and jumpers who were there to compete in freshman, novice, and varsity events hosted by the Bergen County Track Club.

The night’s best overall Lancer performance came from freshman Quin Devlin, who competed in three events in his age class. First up for the talented sprinter and jumper was the 55-meter dash. Devlin ran a quick first heat and was tagged to run in a semi-final, in which he finished with a time of 7.7.

Paris Wins County Wrestling Title

Article Image Alt Text

Livingston High School senior wrestler Austin Paris ripped his way through the Essex County Athletic Directors’ Association Wrestling Tournament last weekend. The Lancer 195 pounder pinned each of his opponents and continued to establish himself as a dominant force at his weight in northern New Jersey.

After receiving a bye as a result of his top seed, Paris took on Jamal Joseph from Irvington in the quarterfinals. A scoreless first period was a bit misleading, as Paris relentlessly attacked Joseph’s legs with outside singles and doubles, but the Irvington grappler was able to use the out-ofbounds line and stalemates to his advantage.

In the second period, Paris took control. He chose the defensive position and immediately escaped, scored a take-down and went to work on top. Paris locked up his farside cradle and pinned Joseph in 3:27.
