Edward Oshins of Coconut Creek, Florida, passed away in Verona on Friday, November 16, 2018. He was 81 years old. Born and raised in Brooklyn, he graduated from Boys High School and received his bachelor’s degree at Brooklyn College. He remained in Brooklyn, marrying and raising his family there, until relocating to Coconut Creek in 2000. As a U.S. Army veteran in the late 1950s, Edward was redeployed in 1962 during the Berlin wall crisis. He was owner of Blue Jay Management in Brooklyn, a firm in the real estate industry. Edward is survived by his wife, Marilyn (Bell) Oshins; sons, Jason and his wife, Alice; David and his wife, Julie; and grandchildren, Jake, Rachel, Julie, Ari and Elizabeth. He is also survived by his sister, Rosalie Lieberman; sister-in-law, Phyllis Jonas, and nieces and nephews, Seth, Elissa and Barry. Services were at Bernheim Apter Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel in Livingston followed by a burial in Beth David Cemetery in Elmont New York.

Diane B. Hasker, 74, of Roseland, formerly of Livingston, died on Thursday, November 15. A funeral Mass was offered on Tuesday, November 20, at St. Philomena Roman Catholic Church in Livingston. Visitation was held at Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home. Born in Newark to Raymond and Helen Smith, Mrs. Hasker was a longtime Livingston resident. After retiring from Foster Wheeler after 40 years of service, she became a volunteer at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. She was a former member of the Columbiettes Incorporated in Bloomfield, and Our Lady of the Mountains Council 3533 in Livingston. Mrs. Hasker was the wife of Ronald Hasker, and sister of Carol Kohler (William), Raymond Smith, and Robert Smith (Susan).

Concern about a lack of civility in public discourse and a request for parental support were key ingredients of a letter that James O’Neill, interim superintendent of the Livingston Public Schools, sent to parents last week. The letter was shared on social media and published in the district’s newsletter and its sentiments were given a “thumbs up” in last week’s Tribune editorial.

O’Neill said it is the responsibility of teachers to establish guidelines at school, and for parents to enforce the appropriate use of technology at home.

SEMI-FINAL SHUT-OUT: The Livingston High School varsity girls’ soccer team shut out Montclair, 1-0, in the semi-final round of the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group 4 Tournament, held at Woodman Field in Montclair. Unfortunately, the Lancers suffered a shut-out of their own in the finals, losing, 1-0, to the West Orange Mountaineers in West Orange.

This weekend, the Livingston High School Theater Club will present Midsummer/Jersey in the LHS auditorium.

Written by Ken Ludwig, the play is a parody of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, with a “Jersey Shore twist,” set on the boardwalk of a seaside town in modern-day New Jersey.

NORTH JERSEY GIANTS FINISH FIRST: The North Jersey Giants 13U fall baseball team, a Livingston-based organization, recently competed in the USABL league, finishing first in both the regular season and the playoffs.

While most of Livingston’s 26 districts encountered little to no problems on Election Day, three encountered some trouble. District 13, in particular, sounded like a nightmare for the poor poll workers assigned to it and the residents unlucky enough to have to vote there.

As we move past one of the most active local elections we have experienced in recent Livingston history – one with record voter participation for a mid-term on local, state and national levels – it is time for the community to turn the page and come back together as one.

The annual Livingston Interfaith Thanksgiving Celebration will be held on Sunday, November 18, at 5 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church of Livingston, 271 West Northfield Road.

“This free, special event has been a major program involving the majority of churches and temples throughout the community. The event was a major highlight of the Livingston Bicentennial Celebration in 2013, and has continued with growing momentum each year,” said Scott Maynard, who is one of the event’s organizers.

At its meeting on Thursday evening, November 8, the Livingston Planning Board continued hearing an application for a minor subdivision and preliminary and final site plan with variances for CP Management Group II.

The property in question, located at 92 South Livingston Avenue, was previously home to a Bank of America on the westerly side of the road.
