Readers Share Thoughts On Troublesome Traffic Areas in Town

The Tribune was flooded with responses to last week’s editorial, asking for readers to submit the roadways and parts of Livingston on which they experienced the most traffic problems. It appears we struck a nerve with motorists and pedestrians looking for safer roadways and better traffic patterns.

Overall, readers were very constructive with their responses, many times offering solutions to what they considered “problem areas” in town.

Firefighters Extinguish Car Fire After Vehicle Hits Utility Pole

A general alarm was sounded on Saturday, June 9, in the wake of a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Shrewsbury Drive and Consul Road.

According to police, the driver, Jeani Millard of Livingston, was traveling north on Shrewsbury Drive when he lost control of his black Mercedes-Benz and hit a utility pole. Millard escaped from the car with no injuries, but the vehicle overturned and caught fire. By the time firefighters arrived on the scene, the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames, but the fire was extinguished with no further incident. No summonses were issued in the accident.

Incumbents Announce School Board Candidacy

Pamela Chirls, who is currently serving as president of the Livingston Board of Education, and Ronnie Konner, a current member and former Board president, each filed their nominating petitions on June 7. They announced that they are seeking re-election to the Livingston Board of Education when their current terms expire at the end of this calendar year.

On Election Day, Tuesday, November 6, Livingston voters will go to the polls to elect two Board of Education members. In all, there are five seats on the Board.

Township Breaks Ground On Habitat Affordable Homes

Livingston is one step closer to providing two new affordable homes, courtesy of a new partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newark. On Monday, June 11, the Township Counsel celebrated that partnership with a groundbreaking ceremony at 11 Grand Terrace.

While it is currently an empty lot, it will soon be transformed into a three-bedroom, two-bathroom colonial-style home, featuring an open front porch and attached garage. A second home, similar in style, will be constructed at 24 Burnet Street.

Hold Funeral Mass For Carol Ann Sexton

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today, Thursday, June 14, at St. Philomena’s Church in Livingston for Carol Ann Sexton, 73, who died on June 8 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Mrs. Sexton grew up in the Ivy Hill section of Newark and raised her family in Livingston before retiring in West Orange. She had worked at the former Beef and Bottle Restaurant on the Livingston Circle as waitress, bartender and assistant manager She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Terence, and her three sons, Michael of Nutley, Vincent of San Diego, California, and Sean of Stevenson Ranch, California; her four grandchildren; and her brother, Vincent (Eileen) Salerno. She was predeceased by her sister, Cathy Saverino.

Services Were Held For Corrine Schwartz

Corrine Forster Schwartz, 82, died on June 9 in Los Gatos, California. Born in Newark, she raised her family in Livingston before moving to Roseland and then to Verona. Services were held at Congregation B’nai Jeshurun in Short Hills, with arrangements by Bernheim Apter Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel. Shiva services will conclude today, Thursday, June 14, from from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m.at the Claridge, 1 Claridge Drive, Verona. Predeceased by her husband, Leonard, and her sister, Sondra Friedner, she is survived by her son, Andrew (Elisa Canova) of Denver, Colorado; her daughters, Marci (Gary Richman) of Los Gatos, and Jodi of Surf City; four grandchildren; and her brother, Joe Forster of Verona. Mrs. Schwartz taught elementary school in East Orange and West Orange. After retiring, she taught at the Barry Greene Early Childhood Center of B’nai Jeshurun, where she developed an Early Literacy Program.

Mass Offered For Giovanni Berlangieri

Giovanni “John” Berlangieri died on June 7 at the age of 92.Born and raised in Laviano, Italy, he moved to the USA in 1966 and lived in Orange, West Orange, Roseland and Livingston. After World War II, he was a construction worker in southern France. He later was an assembly line worker for Westinghouse in Newark, and a crossing guard for West Orange, retiring when he was 88 years old. He was predeceased by his wife, Olga Berlangieri (née Spiotta), and his daughter, Anna Lucia Fiorilli. Surviving are his children, Vincent Berlangieri (Elizabeth); Maria Scaglione; Nicola Berlangieri; Michael Berlangieri (Stacey); Antonella Dowd (John); and John Berlangieri (Joanne); 19 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother; and two sisters. A funeral Mass was offered on Tuesday, June 12, at St. Rose of Lima Church in East Hanover. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Saint Barnabas Hospice Center, 95 Old Short Hills Rd., West Orange, N.J. 07052.

Stolen Maserati Downs Pole, Driver Flees

Route 10 in Livingston was closed for much of Tuesday as crews worked to repair a downed pole and authorities investigated a crash involving a stolen luxury car.

At about 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 5, officers observed a Maserati traveling north on South Livingston Avenue after turning off of Irving Avenue. Once the vehicle got to Livingston Center, it turned onto East Mt. Pleasant Avenue, heading east.

Lancer Baseball Team Wins Championship

The Livingston High School varsity baseball team concluded a “magical” season with a victory over Columbia, giving the Lancers their first conference championship since 1993 and a final record of 21-4.

After winning the county title, Livingston was eliminated by Randolph in the state tournament.
