Last Friday, Livingston High School traveled back in time, and a newly-posted music video takes viewers on a journey through those hallways for the student body’s latest Lip Dub. Then now-annual video features students singing over, or “dubbing” classic songs as they traverse school grounds.

Students Matthew Feresten, Adriana Franchino and Sabrina Katz, members of the LHS’s TV crew, created and produced this year’s video, working since the start of the school year to ensure it was a success. The trio first met last June at Starbucks to start brainstorming video ideas.

Capping a 40-year career with the Livingston Police Department, including his last ten years as Chief of Police, Craig Handschuch has announced he will retire this summer.

Handschuch informed the township this week that he plans to retire, effective September 1. He will complete his tenth year as Chief of Police on August 31. Earlier that month, on August 7, he will surpass 40 years of service in the department.

90-YEAR-OLD COMPLETES FIVE MILE RUN: In celebration of her 90th birthday, longtime Livingston resident Marie (DeMarco) Esposito completed the Spring Lake Five Mile Run on Saturday, May 26. Running alongside were three of her four children and two grandchildren. “My mom walks three miles a day, she eats healthy and always exercised some,” said AnneMarie O’Keefe of Livingston, “The family encouraged her to go on the run to commemorate her birthday.” Esposito, a resident of Livingston for more than 50 years, raised her four children - AnneMarie, Dianne, George, and Paul, in Livingston. “I felt great,” she said. “I just kept going; it was a lot of fun.”

At the start of the Tuesday, May 22, Township Council conference meeting, about a dozen Livingston veterans addressed the Council members, asking them to refrain from hosting events at Memorial Park at the Oval, other than ones honoring veterans who did not return home from war.

There is a memorial area, displayed for all to see, at the entrance to the Oval, on the “island” between the driveways, with its plaques paying respect to the 29 Livingston residents who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

A gas station attendant attempting to retrieve stolen money from a customer was unwillingly dragged half a mile while dangling halfway out of a car window, according to Livingston Police.

At about 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 27, police responded to the Exxon gas station and Tiger Mart on South Orange Avenue in the township for a reported robbery. An investigation revealed an employee had been hanging out the window of a car that sped away from the gas station prior to the officers’ arrival.

The special meeting of the Zoning Board, scheduled for tonight, Thursday, May 31, has been postponed. The meeting was to discuss N.J. Energy Corporation’s proposal to develop the property at 226 West Northfield Road into a gas station and convenience store. As of press time, no new date for the meeting had been announced.

Robert Alan Goldberg, 82, of Livingston died on Saturday, May 26; the funeral service was held on May 29 at Bernheim-Apter-Keitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel. Born in Newark, Mr. Goldberg lived in East Orange and Orange prior to moving to Livingston. He graduated from MIT with a degree in engineering, and was a real estate appraiser and owner of Goldberg Realty in West Caldwell. Surviving are Mr. Goldberg’s wife, Diane; his children, Howard (fiancée, Joanne), Michael (Terri), and Kenneth (Melissa); his five grandchildren, and his brother, Norman (Diane). The family suggests that thoughts of appreciation be directed to the Friendship Circle, 10 Microlab Road, Livingston, N.J. 07039 (www.fcnj.com).

LIVINGSTON RESIDENT VICTIM IN FATAL CRASH: The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has identified Teri Steinberg, 79, of Livingston, as the victim of a fatal accident on South Orange Avenue near Latham Court on Wednesday, May 16. According to Livingston police, Steinberg was turning from Latham Court onto South Orange Avenue when her car collided with a New Jersey Transit bus heading toward the Livingston Mall at about 1:15 p.m. The force of the collision caused the car to crash into a nearby wooded area. Shown here, firefighters work to extricate Steinberg from her vehicle. Steinberg was killed in the crash; four people on the bus suffered minor injuries.

The Livingston High School varsity baseball team won the 2018 Greater Newark Tournament (GNT) Championship, defeating Nutley 8-3, in front of an estimated 1,000 spectators at Doc Goeltz Field in Verona on Sunday, May 20. This marked the seventh time that Livingston has won the title, with the last championship coming in 2009 when the Lancers defeated Nutley, 5-4.

Ryan Cardona threw a complete game, striking out six and walking one. He is now 8-0 for the season.

Sophomore Will Egner was the hitting star of the day. With the Lancers clinging to a 2-1 lead in the third inning, Egner came to bat with the bases loaded and two outs ,and launched the first pitch 365 feet over the left field fence for a grand slam homerun.
