Teri Steinberg, 79, of Livingston died Wednesday, May 16, 2018, in a car accident. Born on February 7, 1939 in Queens, New York, Teri lived most of her adult life in Livingston, where she was a beloved member of the community. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Burton Steinberg; her daughters, Gail Belsik and her wife, Nicole Richardson; Karen Hollander and her husband, Ben; and Joan Spiegel and her husband Danny; her daughter-in-law, Rani Steinberg; and her grandchildren, Matt Steinberg, Tate Hollander, Zev Hollander, Mark Steinberg and Evan Spiegel. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ruth and Milton Korn, and by two sons, Jeffrey Belsik and Robert Steinberg. Services were held on Friday, May 18, at the Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, 68 Old Short Hills Road in Livingston. The family sat Shiva on Saturday and Sunday at The Enclave, 345 South Orange Avenue in Livingston.

On Monday, the intersection of West Northfield Road and Hillside Avenue was closed between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. for milling and paving. The work was certainly essential – we need to maintain our roadways, specifically at major intersections – but it caused a traffic nightmare for many during the morning commute. Sure, road work is typically an inconvenience whenever it occurs, but why start at 7 a.m. on a Monday?

Week after week, year after year, we have reported about car break-ins on the front page of the Tribune. We have run out of new ways to state it at this point, but it still needs to be said, as the thefts are as prevalent as ever in town.

BRINGING HOME MEDALS: Eliot Vishnevsky of Livingston took first place in the standing long jump, and second place in the 50 meter run, at the Essex County Spring Games held on May 9 at Brookdale Park in Bloomfield. “Eliot worked hard this winter in our Special Olympics track and field class, which covered running, throwing and jumping,” commented Jennifer Quirk, the township’s adaptive recreation coordinator and director of its Shining Stars program.

The photographs of Livingston resident Dominick Notare have been selected for display in the one-day Contemporary Art Show sponsored by the M1-5 Lounge at 52 Walker Street in New York City on June 7. A 2007 graduate of Livingston High School, he holds a bachelor’s degree in photography from Kean University and a master’s degree in photography from the Academy of Art University. He is currently completing an internship at the Leila Heller Gallery in New York City.

Notare’s work may also be seen in Little Egg Harbor Township, where selections from his “Horrors in Fashion” photography series are on display in Salon Do or Dye.

The American Division of the Super Essex Conference (SEC) contested its track and field championships at Newark School Stadium on Friday, May 11. The contest saw seven teams battling to be named champion of the toughest division in the conference.

The Lancers, after a tough loss to East Orange, 75-65, on May 9, arrived at the facility, prepared to do their best. “In this championship meet, the scoring toward the title is done by placing in the top six in an event,” explained coach Dave Czeizinger. “The individual is awarded points in the order 10-8-6-4-2-1 according to his finish, first through sixth place.”

An intense thunderstorm accompanied by high winds and torrential rain swept through Livingston at about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, bringing down electrical wires, trees and tree branches, and causing power outages throughout the township.

Fire Chief Chris Mullin reported a number of downed trees – one of which he personally cut up himself to free a blocked lane of traffic on West Mt. Pleasant Avenue.

Council members discussed the impending selection of an energy aggregator, plans for the upcoming Pride Month, and road improvements at the Monday, May 14 Township Council conference meeting.

Bob Chilton, executive vice president of Gabel Associates, briefed the Council on what to expect next week when he presents his recommendations for Livingston’s energy aggregation program.

When the new school year begins, David Cohen, the Livingston school district’s athletic director, will return to teaching students with disabilities at Livingston High School.

A replacement for the athletic director position has not yet been named.

“The past three years have given me the opportunity to work with the Board of Education and administrative team to provide a great athletic experience for student athletes in Livingston,” Cohen said in a prepared statement. He said it has been “eye opening” to witness the commitment and resources that the Board of Education and township dedicate to both high school and youth sports in town.
