Sunshine Week

This week, March 11 through 17, is Sunshine Week, an annual national initiative to educate the public about the importance of open government and access to public information. Just by reading this editorial, you’re helping us celebrate. Sunshine Week is a non-partisan initiative celebrated annually in mid-March since 2005, coinciding with James Madison’s March 16 birthday. The week shines a spotlight on transparency and is a celebration of the freedom of information United States citizens are entitled to receive.

Strong Storm Response

This was not an easy week for Livingston residents. The township was blanketed with 15 to 18 inches of snow last Wednesday, March 7. At its peak, more than half the town was without power. Some residents could not leave their streets for days.

By Friday, more than 2,000 residents were still experiencing outages, and downed trees were preventing others from safely exiting their homes.

Vehicle Stolen During Storm

Livingston Police are investigating the theft of a vehicle that was taken at the start of last week’s snow storm. At about 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 7, police responded to Martin Road for a report of a stolen 2014 Lexus.

The owner said the Lexus was parked in the driveway at 6 p.m. the previous night, and it was discovered missing Wednesday morning.

Funeral Services Held For Marilyn Chaiken

Marilyn B. Chaiken (Barnhard) died in her Livingston home on Tuesday, March 6. She was 83. Born in Newark, Mrs. Chaiken attended Weequahic High School and Newark State Teachers’ College, now Kean University. She taught in Elizabeth, Kendall Park, and at the Millburn School for the Hearing Impaired. After retiring, she volunteered at Saint Barnabas Medical Center for many years. Mrs. Chaiken is survived by her husband of 61 years, Richard; her daughter, Amy Wolffe (Elliott); her sister, Gladys Barnhard; and three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son, Mark; her brother Robert; and her sister, Belle Goldklang. A funeral service was held Sunday, March 11, at the Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel of Livingston. Interment took place in Mount Lebanon Cemetery, Iselin. The family has suggested that memorial donations be made in Mrs. Chaiken’s name to Jespy House, 102 Prospect Street, South Orange, NJ;.

Mass Offered Monday For Mrs. Italia Romano

Italia Romano (nee De Vito) died Wednesday, March 7, in her Livingston home. She was 85 years old. Arrangements were by the LaMonica Memorial Home of Livingston. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Monday, March 12, in St. Philomena Roman Catholic Church in Livingston, followed by the interment in Gate of Heaven, East Hanover. Born in Newark, Mrs. Romano lived in East Orange before moving to Livingston 50 years ago. She was employed by Sears in Livingston for more than 30 years as a sales clerk, retiring 20 years ago. She was the wife of Erminio Romano; the mother of Angelo and his wife, Dawn; David and his wife, Connie; and Robert and his wife, Maria; and the sister of Mary Venutola, Angelina DeLucia, and the late Theresa Petrozzello. She is also survived by five grandchildren.

Jeffrey Beck, 64 of Ellicott City, Maryland, formerly of Livingston, N.J., passed peacefully on March 10, 2018. Jeffrey Beck, LPC, ICGC II, BACC, JD, CART, MCTC, ABD, was the Clinical Director at The Maryland Center of Excellence on Problem Gambling, which is part of the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He previously served as the Assistant Director of Clinical Services, Research and Treatment at the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey. Jeffrey practiced law for 18 years before returning to school to get a Masters in Addiction Counseling and completing all course work and qualifying exams for a Ph.D. in Social Work. Jeff was a graduate of Livingston High School, Class of 1971. He also graduated from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, and from Seton Hall University School of Law. Jeffrey loved music, reading, bridge, sports and, above all else – life.

Leon Rynar

Leon Rynar, 94, passed away at his residence in Verona, New Jersey on Thursday, February 15, 2018. Funeral services were held at Menorah Chapel at Millburn on Sunday, February 18. Leon was born in Newark, New Jersey, and lived in Livingston for 45 years before moving to Verona in 2004. He served in the Pacific campaign as a captain in the U.S. Air Force. He was an account executive with Vector Engineering in Springfield, New Jersey, and for the past 19 years he worked for Fabulous Specialties in Livingston. Leon was a founding member of Temple Emanu-El in Livingston. He and his late wife, Roslyn, received their bachelor of arts degrees from Montclair State University in 2001. Leon was the beloved husband of the late Roslyn; devoted father of Dr. James and Susan Rynar, Craig Rynar and Dr. Jennifer Giordano, Betsy and Ron Ladell, Lynn Rynar and Monte Miller, Dr.

LHS Ice Hockey Players Team Up With Shining Stars Floor Hockey Team

The Livingston High School boys ice hockey team joined the Shining Stars special needs floor hockey team on Saturday, February 24 at Monmouth Court Community Center. The event kicked off the Shining Stars’ six-week winter floor hockey program.

Assistant coach Trey Peacock arrived with his team to teach stick skills and interactive games in a “fun” way. During the clinic, each of his team members paired up with a Shining Star player to be a “buddy.”

Livingston Junior Lancer Lacrosse Alumni Flourish at Highest Levels of College Lacrosse

Three alumni of the Livingston Junior Lancer Lacrosse League – Tommy Heller, Stephen Russo, and Brian Tevlin – have taken their game to leading NCAA Division I and Division III Lacrosse programs.

Tommy Heller is a 2018 preseason All-American attackman at Gettysburg University, the sixth best NCAA Division III Lacrosse team in the country. While only 5’6” tall and weighing 150 pounds, Heller is emblematic of the lacrosse saying, “Size doesn’t matter; what matters is your heart, your mind, and your work ethic.”

Regulate Airbnb

At Monday’s Township Council meeting, a resident complained of parties that were held every weekend night into the early morning hours across the street from her home. That Fordham Road house, which is listed for sale on Zillow for $1.2 million, is available on Airbnb at $187 per night, though previously it was available for as low as $71 per night, according to the resident.
