Former New Jersey Governor Richard Codey was one of two individuals who pulled a man from a car wreck last week in town.

At 11:11 a.m. on Friday, June 26, Christine Murray, 66, of Livingston was operating a 2016 Jeep eastbound on West Mt. Pleasant Avenue and attempted a left turn in the path of a westbound vehicle.

The westbound vehicle was a 2009 Honda operated by Samuel Cherfas, 34, of Livingston. Cherfas swerved to avoid Murray, causing his car to leave the road and strike a utility pole. The pole and transformers landed on the Honda.

Two men are facing charges after exiting a stolen car and fleeing the scene in an attempt to evade police Tuesday morning, Livingston Police said.

At 2:16 a.m. on Tuesday, June 30, Officer Andrew Danielsen was on patrol along South Orange Avenue when he saw a 2005 Toyota RAV­4, which appeared to be travelling in excess of the speed limit, make an abrupt turn on East Hobart Gap Road. The Toyota quickly accelerated and travelled into the dead end portion of Canoe Brook Road.

Both the driver and passenger then fled the vehicle on foot into residential backyards. Officers from Livingston and Millburn conducted a prolonged search and located both suspects on Fenton Drive in Millburn.

On Friday, June 26, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy detailed the state Department of Education’s plan for reopening public schools in the fall, titled “The Road Back: Restart and Recovery Plan for Education.” The 104­page report provided the outline to return students and faculty to classrooms in September.

“With this guidance, we’re confident that our students, educators, and staff will walk back into our superb schools in September, where they can safely learn and thrive,” Governor Murphy said.

The state issued four principles to guide the school reopening: ensuring a conducive learning atmosphere, supporting educational leaders with planning, providing policy guidance and necessary funding to schools, and securing continuity of learning.

VILLANOVA MEMBERS ARE RECREATION CHAMPS: It was announced this week that the Livingston ninth grade Villanova Wildcats defeated the UCLA Bruins in an action-packed, back-and-forth championship game in early March. Villanova avenged an earlier loss that day to the Bruins by overcoming them twice to win the ninth grade 2019-20 Livingston recreation basketball championship. Shown here, the Wildcats included coach Alex Gantman, Tyler Spielman, Ben Gantman, Luke Seidman, coach Paul Kates, Derek Ford, Keiffer Alghali, Noah Kates, Nick Youssef, Joseph Anthony, and T.J. Abe Rimatzki is the Livingston High School recipient of the Essex County Scholar Athlete award for males. It was to have been presented at a dinner that had to be canceled due to the pandemic.

As a scholar athlete, Rimatzki said it was important to maintain a balanced schedule during the sports season. He played both basketball and soccer, and explained that practices would take up a lot of time after school. “Some game days,” he added, “I would not be home until eight or nine at night.

“I spent hours in the gym getting up shots each week, and each year before soccer season I made sure to get on the track to be in soccer shape.”

Bailey Krug, a 2020 graduate of Livingston High School, received the Yogi Berra Teammate of the Year Award during a virtual ceremony on April 20.

“The experience was definitely different but very special,” he said. “While we weren’t able to gather and support one another in person, it was nice to be able to see the other winners, and hear stories from Yogi Berra’s family and the president and CEO of Investors Bank, which sponsors the event.”

Krug played both football and lacrosse his four years at LHS, and served as varsity captain in both sports as a senior.

Former Livingston resident Agnes Cassidy, 82, died in Branchville, where she had recently moved, on Saturday, June 27.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Mrs. Cassidy was a reader and clipper at Burrelles Clipping Service in Livingston for 35 years.

Predeceased by her husband, John, Mrs. Cassidy is survived by her daughter, Catherine Banuls and her husband, Kenneth; her sisters, Helen Smith, Ann Crighton, Elsie Sanderson, and Ada Donnelly; and her granddaughter.

Visitation is private, and a graveside service will be held at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover, on Thursday, July 2 at 1 p.m. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home.

Bryan Alexander Smith, 57, who grew up in Livingston and lived in South Orange and West Orange, died on June 9 in Marietta, Georgia.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Pamela; his children, Rebecca and Max; his mother and stepfather, Toni Smith and Jerrold Feigenbaum; his sister, Maureen Smith; his mother­inlaw, Nancy Denburg; and his future son­in­law, Garrett McCorkle.

Mitzi Feier, 94, passed away on Monday, June 22, 2020. Services will be delayed until safety can be assured. A family website will be accessible in the near future through the Bernheim­Apter­ Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel website.

A lifelong resident of Essex County, Mitzi rose from a medical technologist at Irvington General Hospital to managing the laboratories at the Veterans’ Administration Hospital in East Orange and teaching Medical Technologist students.

Mitzi was a sweet matriarch with a wicked sense of humor and an inner toughness to keep her extended family in line. A Renaissance woman, she was interested in literature, birding, science, and her family. She was a member of the American Association of University Women’s Scholarship Committee and the Livingston Library Book Club, and received the 1976 New Jersey Society of Medical Technologists’ “Med Tech of the Year” award.
