At Tuesday night’s school budget forum, the Livingston Board of Education and administration decided to reschedule the public hearing about the school spending plan to Thursday, May 7, in order to have as much information as possible before formalizing the budget.

The later date also gives the Board more time to hear from the community and take into consideration their concerns and questions, said Board president Ronnie Konner. The hearing had been scheduled to take place on Monday, April 27, which will still be held as a regular school board meeting.

As the global COVID-19 pandemic continues, long term care facilities are continuing to be hit hard in the United States. More than 7,000 nursing home residents have died from COVID-19 nationwide, according to reports. In New Jersey, at the epicenter of the U.S. outbreak with the second most cases in the country, the problem is concerning enough that governor Phil Murphy is asking his attorney general to investigate certain facilities and their responses, specifically a nursing home in Andover where reportedly more than 70 residents have died from COVID-19. New Jersey has more than 400 long term care facilities, and experts have predicted for weeks that outbreaks in these types of facilities would be particularly deadly. Most are now barring visitors and asking all employees to wear the proper equipment and be screened for symptoms, but staffing issues and a lack of gear has posed problems and dangers.

Eugene (Gene) Francis Fitzpatrick, 71, died on Friday, April 10, at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. Born in Newark, he was a longtime Livingston resident who moved to East Hanover nine years ago.

Mr. Fitzpatrick was a graduate of the Chubb Institute. He worked for Foster Wheeler and Novartis Pharmaceuticals as a database administrator, and retired in 2009.

Predeceased by his son, Michael, who died in 2017, Mr. Fitzpatrick is survived by his wife, Cindylu (Pierce) Fitzpatrick; Michael’s mother, Catherine; and his daughterin-law, Heather (Longden) Fitzpatrick.

Burial was private at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover. A memorial mass and celebration of life will be held at a future date. Messages of condolence may be made at oboylefuneralhome.com.

Alfred J. Stanaway, 77, of Livingston died on April 9. Born in Jersey City to Alfred Stanaway, Sr. and Mary (Carugan) Salmini, he lived in Bayonne before moving to Livingston in 1972.

Mr. Stanaway was a veteran of the U.S. National Guard. He started his professional career in 1961, setting up Ford Motor Company’s first leasing program and then worked for 3M Microfilm. He co-created M.I.S. (Microfilm Identification System); ran Honey Bee, a health food store in Millburn; and owned various car wash businesses. He raised money for pediatric cancer through Hugs for Brady, and was a Man of the Year for the Rainbow Foundation of New Monmouth.

John Jacobsen, 77, died on April 12. He was born in Orange to Ingvald and Solveig Jacobsen and was raised in West Orange. He settled in Livingston in 1961 and recently moved to West Caldwell. Prior to his retirement, he worked in the warehouse at Fabulous Wall Coverings in West Orange. He was a longtime attendee of Bethany Evangelical Free Church in West Orange.

Mr. Jacobsen was predeceased by his brother, Stanley Jacobsen, and is survived by his friends, Anton and Kay Thomasen.

Interment will be held privately at Pleasantdale Cemetery in West Orange, with arrangements by Shook-Farmer Funeral Home, Roseland. A Memorial Service will be offered at a later date.

In lieu of flowers a donation in Mr. Jacobsen’s memory may be made to Bethany Evangelical Free Church, 30 Ashwood Terrace, West Orange, NJ 07052.

So said Mike Skara after he completed “The Backyard 50K” on Sunday, April 19, at his home on West Cedar Street in Livingston. The event raised $3,000 combined for the COVID-19 response by the PAL of Berkeley Heights and the annual Relay for Life for cancer research.

Mark S. Venturi, 63, died peacefully on April 9 in Parsipanny. He was born in Lake Hopatcong, to the late Silvio J. Venturi and June Venturi, née Traettino. He grew up in Short Hills and graduated from Newark Academy.

Mr. Venturi was a longtime resident of Livingston, where he was vice president of Amark Industries, a wire manufacturing company founded by his father. Predeceased by his wife, Kim Colombrita, he is survived by his daughter, Andrea Venturi of Cedar Knolls, and his stepson, J.P. Guerrieri of Neptune. There will be no service at this time, due to the coronavirus pandemic. Arrangements are under the direction of Bradley-Braviak Funeral Home in Whippany.

Paula Michaels died on Saturday, April 11, at the age of 83. Born to Milton and Rose Schwartz of Newark, Mrs. Michaels grew up in West Orange and lived there and in Livingston.

Mrs. Michaels was married to her first husband, Joe Maran, with whom she had three children, David, Jodi and Erik, for 22 years, and then to Herb Michaels for 31 years.

Mrs. Michaels is survived by her children, David and his wife, Denise; Jodi and her husband, Alan; and Erik and his fiancée, Regina; her brother, Arthur, and his wife, Teresa; and six grandchildren and one great granddaughter.

Services were arranged by Mount Sinai Memorial Chapels, East Brunswick and were private due to the COVID-19 restrictions on public gatherings. In lieu of flowers or tributes, donations may be made to The Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org.
