CITIZEN OF THE YEAR: Brian Boyle of Livingston has been named Livingston UNICO’s “Citizen of the Year” for 2020. A Vietnam veteran who has been active in town, he will be honored for his many years of volunteer service to both the community and the nation. The award will be presented at UNICO’s 65th annual Awards Brunch, to be held on April 18 at the Hanover Manor in East Hanover. Frank J. Biondi, Jr., died at home in Los Angeles on November 25, following a battle with bladder cancer. He was 75 years old.

Mr. Biondi grew up in Livingston and graduated from Livingston High School, where he served as the captain of the baseball team.

At Princeton University, he majored in psychology, and was a baseball center fielder. Mr. Biondi earned an MBA from Harvard University in 1968.

He was, at various times, chief executive of HBO, Viacom, and Universal Studios.

Mr. Biondi is survived by his wife of 45 years, Carol Oughton Biondi; his daughters, Anne Biondi Simonds and Jane Biondi Munna; six grandchildren; and his brother, Robert Biondi.

Memorial services were held in January in Los Angeles and are also being planned for this summer in Cape Cod.

David L. Goldsmith, 93, of Livingston died on February 10, following a brief illness.

Mr. Goldsmith was born in Newark in 1926 and graduated from East Orange High School in 1944. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a signalman and gunner in the South Pacific during World War II. He graduated from Rutgers Uni

He graduated from Rutgers University in 1949 with a degree in economics, and worked in the ladies’ lingerie business for over 40 years. He worked for his father’s firm, M. H. Goldsmith & Co., Inc. and later became president of DLG & Associates, Inc., and David Goldsmith Enterprises.

After his retirement in 1992, Mr. Goldsmith became president of the Mental Health Association of Essex County and served on the boards of several organizations. He also served on the fee arbitration and ethics committees of the Supreme Court of New Jersey, and as a volunteer mediator for the Superior Court of Essex County.

Herbert H. Schilling, 93, a lifelong resident of Livingston, N.J., passed away on Sunday, February 16, 2020.

He was born to Henrietta and Charles J. Schilling. Herbert served his country proudly in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater as a sergeant field medic. He proudly served his community as a lifelong member of the Livingston Volunteer Fire Department. He was a charter member of the Livingston First Aid Squad, and a volunteer with the Madison First Aid Squad back in the 1950s.

As a successful entrepreneur, in 1964 Herbert founded Mendham Plywood and Building Products in Mendham, N.J., and developed and expanded the business into a flourishing lumberyard and building supply company.

Selma Ruth Ross (née Feldman), 96, of Livingston, died on Tuesday, February 11.

Born in Newark, she lived in various towns in the state and moved to Livingston a year ago. She also had a residence in Boca Raton, Florida, for many years.

Funeral services were held Sunday, February 16, at Menorah Chapels at Millburn. She was interred at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, Iselin.

Mrs. Ross was the owner and operator of Shalom Memorials in Union, from 1980 until her retirement in 1990. She had previously worked at Western Electric, Dumont Electronics, and at her late husband’s commercial art business, Ross Advertising.

Pre-deceased by her husband, Herbert Ross, and her sister, Gloria Geller, she is survived by her daughter, Karen Ross Kerstein (Gary); her son, Mark Samuel Ross (Robin); her brother, Martin Feldman (Marilyn); her brother-in-law,Herbert Geller; and four grandchildren.

Ken Mullaney of Livingston, shown with his wife, Marie, received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Department for Persons with Disabilities (DPD) of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Paterson. The award was presented at the 50th annual Murray House Dinner Dance on February 16.

Murray House, one of the DPD’s 12 residential facilities, is the longest running group home for adults with developmental disabilities in the state.

As general counsel of the Diocese of Paterson, Mullaney is responsible for all legal matters involving the Diocese, including Catholic Charities. In 2011 he received the Caritas Award for Advocacy, also presented by Catholic Charities.

Believe it or not, summer is just around the corner, and registration has opened for Livingston’s pools. The early bird registration will be open through April, at which point membership prices will increase. So anyone planning to take advantage of our pools this summer should sign up within the next few months.

This week, the Tribune presents its bi-annual “Celebrate Livingston’s History” section. It is one of our most popular sections (in fact, last year’s edition just won a first place New Jersey Press Association award!), in part because it speaks to our township’s sense of community; no matter who we are, we live here, together, in Livingston, and we all share that common thread. Livingston is a large town with a population of nearly 30,000, but we are regularly surprised to discover just how small it can feel. This history-focused section reflects that.
