Richard Flinn, Sr.

Richard Flinn, Sr., 59, passed away on Tuesday, December 10, 2019, in Livingston, NJ.

Born in Orange, NJ, Richard was a life-long resident of Livingston. He worked as a police officer for 25 years, before his retirement in 2005. Richard was also the past president of the Livingston PBA Local 263.

Richard was predeceased by his mother, Pauline. He is survived by his loving father, Albert; his sons, Richard Jr., and Sean; his brother, Patrick and his wife, Krista; his nieces and nephews, Patrick Jr, Devin, Connor, Sam, Matt, Kelly, Brittany, and Ally; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who will miss him dearly.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 18, 2019 from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Quinn- Hopping Funeral Home of Livingston. The Funeral Mass will be offered on Thursday, December 19, 2019 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church, Roseland. Cremation will be private.

Maryann B. Danton

Maryann B. Danton (née Kopec), 72, a longtime resident of Livingston, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 14, 2019 with her loving family at her side.

Born in Bayonne, she moved to Livingston 43 years ago. Maryann was a homemaker and caretaker, worked for the Social Security Administration, and retired as a bus aide for the Board of Education in Livingston.

Maryann was predeceased by her beloved husband, Daniel – together again… together forever; her parents, John and Mary Kopec (née Habinowski); her in-laws, Jack and Pauline Danton (née Loss); her brother-in-law, Arthur Danton; and her sister-in-law, Lorraine Danton. She is survived by her two loving daughters, Jill and Alison Danton; her cherished granddaughter, Caitlin; her dear brother, John Michael Kopec; her brother-in-law, Bernard Danton; her nephews, Justin M. Kopec and Ben Danton; and her niece, Casey Danton. She is also survived by many loving cousins and dear family friends.

Private Service Held For John M. Notte, 86

John M. “Jack” Notte, a longtime resident of Livingston, died on December 8.

Born and raised in Newark, he played high school football and was inducted into the Newark Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012.

Mr. Notte served in the U.S. Army during the KoreanWar, and worked as a pension fund manager for Prudential for 35 years. He also served on the board of OCEC, an organization for the mentally disabled.

Predeceased by his brother, Gregory, Mr. Notte is survived by his wife of 41 years, Laurette D. Notte; his children, Edwin Pienkowski and his fiancée, Rita Ragone, Lynnette “Sissy” Barg and her husband, Jeff, and Laura Tunney; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held privately. Donations in Mr. Notte’s memory may be made to the Livingston Police Department or First Aid Squad.

Funeral Mass Friday For Michael Marchitello

Michael A. Marchitello Sr., 58, died Friday, December 13, at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston.

Visitation will take place today, Thursday, December 19, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the O’Boyle Funeral Home in Bloomfield. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Friday, December 20, at 9:30 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass at St. Rose of Lima Church in East Hanover at 11 a.m. Interment will take place at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover.

Born in Belleville, Mr. Marchitello lived much of his life in Livingston, spending the last 23 years in East Hanover.

He was self-employed, and the owner of Auto Imports, Auto Repair and Used Car Dealership.

He was the son of Carmen and Joyce McNaughten Marchitello; the father of Michael Marchitello Jr.; and the brother of Anthony Marchitello, Kathryn Marchitello, Joyce Aromando (Marchitello), and Jessica Marchitello.

Student Designs SNAPApp For Low Income Families

While completing her academic work and other extracurricular activities, Livingston High School senior Dana Brustein found time to create an app for the Congressional App Challenge.

Earlier this month, Representative Mikie Sherrill called Brustein to tell her that she won the 2019 competition in New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District.

Brustein learned about the Challenge through a former robotics teammate. The Challenge is sponsored by the U.S. House of Representatives, with the goal of encouraging students to code and enter the field of computer science.

A Christmas Story of Old Livingston

Mine Hill Revisited:

Editor's note: Between 1953 and 1972 Freeman Harrison wrote a series of articles for the West Essex Tribune about Christmas in early Liv ingston. Mr. Harrison was the township's unofficial historian, and wrote of these holidays from his own experience.

Born in 1887 in Livingston, he was the son of Amos Harrison, in whose honor the elementary school on North Livingston Avenue is named.

He graduated from Princeton University in 1911, and taught at Livingston High School when the classes met in a small wood frame building where the Firestone garage is now located.

Football Parents Honor Seniors:

FOOTBALL PARENTS HONOR SENIORS

The Livingston Football Parents honored the players at the annual Lancer football banquet, held Sunday, December 15, at the Hanover Manor. Each player was presented by his coach and received a gift. Senior gifts included a framed varsity uniform jersey and a portrait poster. The event was highlighted by the slideshow of action photos compiled by LHS graduate Andrew “Morty” Mordzynski. Head coach Robert Breschard served as master of ceremonies, assisted by the LHS football staff. Football Parents president Suzanne Russo and committee members organized the event, which included a brunch and parent photo session. Shown here, the seniors display their jerseys and portraits. Genesis Expected to Go Live Tonight; Cleaning, Reimaging Almost Complete

Technology Recovery Update:

In a letter to school families published in the Livingston Public Schools e-newsletter, on Monday, December 15, Dr. Matthew Block, superintendent of schools, discussed the progress the district is making in rebuilding its technology systems.

Cleaning and reimaging of school devices is almost complete, and the district plans to open Genesis, the web-based student records system, to students and parents tonight, Thursday, December 19.

An unexpected finding from the technology loss will result in the district’s putting an end to student access to grades during the school day.

Police Chief Pays Tribute to Officer Flinn

Former longtime Livingston police officer Richard Flinn died December 10 at the age of 59.

Police Chief Gary Marshuetz, who worked with Officer Flinn for the first half of his career, recalled, “Duty, honor, respect, integrity are just but some of the many distinguishable attributes Rich possessed and lived by in both his personal and professional career.

“He embodied what it meant to have community pride and spirit. His career was filled with many acknowledgments for having coordinated or participated in community functions which fostered and manifested the very idea of community.”

Council Prepares 2020 Business In Final Meeting of the Year

At the final Livingston Township Council meeting of the year on Monday, December 16, the Council passed resolutions for 2020, and reflected on the year that was.

“It’s been a pleasure to be the mayor,” said Al Anthony, who will end his second term as mayor and continue as a Council member at the end of the month.

As such, he issued a proclamation to his wife, declaring it Lori Anthony Day. He pledged to return to assuming “his fair share of the household responsibilities” now that his mayoral term is ending.
