Michael Douglas Mitschele died in his sleep on Thursday, November 21. He was 63 years old.

Raised in Livingston, Mr. Mitschele was a 1974 graduate ofWest Essex High School. He lived in Roseland for over 25 years, where he ran Baer Concrete and was a founding member of the Roseland First Aid Squad. He later lived in Pine, Colorado, and in Asbury Park for the past six years.

Mr. Mitschele is survived by his daughters Melissa (Ron Brizzie) and Dawn (Tory Henry); his son, Daniel (Erin); his longtime partner, Kelly Bogart; and five grandchildren.

He is also survived by his parents, Herbert J. Jr. and Joyce Mitschele; and his siblings, Clinton Mitschele, Cheryl Eichmann, Louis Mitschele, Patricia Beaumont, and Lisa Campbell.

Mr. Mitschele was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Evans and Virginia Mitschele; and a brother, Herbert J. Mitschele III.

John Joseph Farrell Jr., formerly of Livingston, died at home on Saturday, November 16, in Des Moines, Washington.

Born in Springfield, Mr. Farell was educated at St. Benedict’s Prep and Georgetown University. He served in Korea as a lieutenant in the USAF, and was a Wall Street businessman and entrepreneur.

He and his former wife, Mary Jo Heck, raised their children in Livingston. When they separated, Mr. Farrell moved to New York City.

Mr. Farrell was predeceased by his son, Jay; his former wife, Mary Jo; and his brother, Jimmy. He is survived by his children, Lisa and Christopher; his wife, Galena; his brother, Billy (Alvera); and his sisters, Peggy McGuire and Cathy Rock.

Thanks to the Experimental Aircraft Association (EEA), our editor, Michael Izzo, and I recently enjoyed a flight aboard the historic “Tin Goose” – the FordTri-Motor.The Ohio-based EEA had come to New Jersey to offer flights out of Essex CountyAirport.As neither of us is particularly afraid of heights or of flying – something that can’t necessarily be said for some of our Tribune colleagues – we were happy to take the EEA up on its offer of a flight.

It’s definitely a fun experience if you’re not afraid of heights, or of flying. And if you have a strong bladder, because the three-prop plane has no bathroom, and the flight was a bit vibrational, shall we say.

The Livingston Fire Department, with help from the Roseland and West Orange Fire Departments, were able to bring a house fire at 6 Twilight Court under control on Monday, November 25.

Emergency responders were alerted when Livingston Police dispatch received a 9-1-1 call from the homeowner reporting black smoke coming from the ceiling area of a second floor bathroom. A general alarm was sounded, and firefighters arrived to find a working fire in the second floor rear roof area of the house. All occupants of the house had escaped the structure without injury.

Members of Engine Co. 1 established a water supply from a nearby hydrant and stretched two 1¾” hand lines to the second floor via a rear balcony access to the second floor.

A half century ago, on November 27, 1969, the Livingston High School football team emerged as co-champion of the Jersey Hills Conference after a 12-7 win on Thanksgiving Day. The win tied Livingston with Morris Hills for the conference title.

The stakes were high, and the Lancers gave it their all, and claimed a win against West Essex. Both had entered the game with 4-2 records.

A rideshare driver was robbed and a taxi driver was nearly forced into causing an accident by an intoxicated passenger at about the same time in town this past weekend.

Just after midnight on Sunday, November 24, a Lyft driver picked up three passengers. As they drove on Shrewsbury Drive, one of the passengers pulled out a gun and another passenger pulled out a knife, threatening the driver as the third passenger robbed him of $7,500.

The suspects, three black males, fled the scene on foot. An extensive search of the area was conducted by police officers from Livingston, Roseland, Essex Fells, Cedar Grove, East Hanover, and West Orange.

“The Livingston Public Schools Were the Victims of a Crime”

Livingston Public Schools was the victim of a Ransomware attack last week, encrypting the school district’s data.The attack has made basic school functions – from submitting homework to recording lunch payments – more difficult.

Details of what happened were shared through emails to parents and staff, as well as a public meeting at the high school on Monday evening, November 25.

The Livingston Police Department also issued a press release, which said that the Board of Education notified them – at about 11:15 a.m. on Thursday, November 21 – that the district’s mainframe computer system and the information contained within it was compromised.

Livingston Philanthropies, Inc. (LPI) volunteers saw it first hand this week. It took only a nine-minute ride, just 3.9 miles, to drive home the geographic closeness of the “haves” and “have-nots.” We read about the widening financial divide and economic inequality folks suffer through every day, just minutes away from Livingston. Livingston, too, has its share of poor residents, readers should know.

Mascots danced down the aisle and elementary school Student Council officers talked about their activities to build community, as principals, advisors, teachers and parents cheered them on.

So began the November 18 Board of Education meeting.

“I have been impressed with the true purpose with which our elementary schools build connections to our schools, build identity and build community, said superintendent Matthew Block.

“While I know we will have fun tonight… the work of creating communities in each of our schools is very serious work,” he said.

Alfred Pichat passed away at age 85 on Sunday, November 17. He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1934. He graduated from the Instituto Otto Krause with a degree in electrical engineering. He also served in the Argentine army, Ejército Argentino, before emigrating to the United States in 1959. Alfred married in 1960 and moved to Livingston with his wife, Eleanor, where they lived and raised their family for 58 years. Alfred worked for over 30 years with G-V Controls in Livingston, where he was awarded a patent for airflow sensor technology. His long record of community service includes umpiring Little League games; refereeing adult soccer matches; working with the Ely Cemetery and the Livingston Historical Society; and serving as a volunteer handyman for Livingston senior citizens. He was also a founding member of the Livingston Babe Ruth Baseball League, an avid tennis player, and a Formula 1 racing fan.
