Ada Parness of Livingston and Boynton Beach, Florida, died on October 27. Born in Albany, New York, she lived in Bridgewater for 48 years before moving to Livingston.

After working as a secretary, Mrs. Parness graduated from Rutgers University with a B.A. in English and from Seton Hall University with a master’s degree in special education. She was employed by theWoodbridge school system as a learning disabilities teacher consultant.

She was active with Deborah Hospital and Temple Shalom, where she was chairman of the board.

Mrs. Parness was predeceased by her husband, Leonard; a daughterin-law, Marleen; and a grandson, Matthew. She is survived by two daughters, Elayne (Alan) Pollet of East Hanover and Debra Goldstein of Livingston; two sons, Richard of Springfield and Michael (Diana) of Wayne; a sister, Lois Apfelbaum of New York City; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Irene Strausberg (née Silver) of Union, formerly of Livingston, died on September 4.

Born in Trenton, Mrs. Strausberg received an associate’s degree from Rider University and worked as a secretary for M.J. Fein & Co. in East Hanover.

She was a volunteer at Brick Hospital and acted at the Greenbrier Woodlands Community Theatre.

Predeceased by her husband, Arthur, and a daughter, Caren Castor, she is survived by her son, Jerry (Mary); a daughter, Judy (Kenneth) Nemiroff; a sister, Doris Troll; and five grandchildren.

Services were held September 10 with arrangements by Ross’ Shalom Chapels, Springfield. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

The Livingston Police Department is continuing its increased patrols on five different streets this week, according to Chief Gary Marshuetz.

In the upcoming week, the police will perform radar enforcement and address other traffic safety concerns on Congressional Parkway, Mt. Pleasant Parkway, Scarsdale Drive, Microlab Road, and Falcon Road.

The enforcement will begin Friday, November 15, and run through next Friday, November 22, at which time the added patrols will move on to new areas of the township.

Radium Girls, a play by D.W. Gregory, will be presented by the Livingston High School Drama Club on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, November 14, 15 and 16 at 6:30 p.m.

The play is based on the real life story of the “Radium Girls,” female factory workers who contracted radiation poisoning from painting watch dials with self-luminous paint at the United States Radium factory in Orange, New Jersey in the early part of the 20th century.

The women, who were told the paint was harmless, ingested deadly amounts of radium after being instructed to “point” their brushes on their lips in order to give them a fine point.

In recent Municipal Court action, five people were fined for driving while intoxicated (DWI) in unrelated incidents during August and September.

Ricky Alston Jr., 27, of Irvington, was charged August 23 with DWI and having an open container of alcohol in his car. The latter charge was dismissed as part of a plea agreement. Alston pled guilty to DWI.

John Burkhard, 46, of Roseland, was charged August 3 with DWI; reckless driving; speeding; and failure to produce a driver’s license. The reckless driving and failure to produce license charges were dismissed as part of a plea agreement. Burkhard pled guilty to DWI and to speeding.

Livingston Philanthropies, Inc. (LPI) is keeping busy delivering coats and toiletries to the homeless. “Right now, it’s all about coats and winter accessories,” said Jeff Friedman, founder and director of the Livingston-based charity. “Evening temperatures continue to dip into the 20s in Newark and around the state. For those living on the freezing streets or somewhere else with little or no heat, coats are vital even when temperatures reach highs into the 50s. The 20s are just plain punishing.”
Friedman, who is known affectionately as “the Coat Guy,” began his charitable endeavors eight years ago as seasonal coat drive. He later expanded his efforts into a year ‘round toiletries collection, and eventually formed a 501(c)3 charitable organization.

John G. Silano, 89, of Chatham, New Jersey, formerly of Livingston, passed away Sunday, November 3, 2019.

His family will receive relatives and friends for visitation on Friday, November 8 from 11 a.m. to noon at Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church, 234 Southern Boulevard, Chatham, New Jersey. The Funeral Mass celebrating his life will be held immediately afterwards at noon, followed by the committal services at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover, New Jersey.

Born in Tuckahoe, New York, to Elena and Giovani Silano, John served his country proudly in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. John was a very proud veteran and a fine man with a lot of wisdom. John was a buyer for FosterWheeler for the duration of his career. He enjoyed playing golf with our mom and many business associates. John enjoyed vacationing in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and Boca Raton, Florida, later going to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

Michael D. Tetta, 79, of Livingston, died on October 31. He was a sales representative for Pfizer Pharmaceutical.

Mr.Tetta was the husband of 54 years to PattyTetta; father of Michelle (Rich) Giacalone and Dana (Frankie) Granato; and the grandfather of three.

A memorial mass was held at St. Rose of Lima Church in East Hanover.

Donations in Mr. Tetta’s name may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital,501 St. Jude Place, Memphis TN 38105.

With Election Day behind us and Veterans Day in front of us, it is a good time to think about “honor,” whether that means honoring voter decisions or honoring those who have fought for our great nation. These two significant days of our year present us with an interesting timeline. On Tuesday, we face the election results cheering if our candidates win. Over the next few days, we begin to shake off our “winner/loser” attitudes and move forward. And on Monday, we will pay tribute to all of the men and women who have served in the United States military services that protect our great nation.

Election Day and Veterans Day are inextricably linked. Our soldiers protect our democracy and its values, including the right to vote. It is as simple, and as complicated, as that. Veterans fight on our behalf. On Veterans Day, we celebrate their service and their dedication to our country.

The Livingston High School girls’ cross country team competed in the Essex County Championships on Friday, November 1, at Brookdale Park in Bloomfield.

“The Lady Lancers knew they needed to mentally and physically be ready for a Friday evening battle,” recounted coach Dave Czeizinger. “Team goals had been discussed, personal race plans laid out, and the squad rested in preparation for the tough competition they would face from the other county schools represented at the meet. The crew had worked very hard over the past two weeks preparing for the race.” The Lancer girls were represented in the junior varsity and varsity championships, noted the coach, “opting to give their freshman runners more experience at the 5K distance instead of the shorter 3,200 meter mixed freshman race.”

More than 230 female competitors from Essex County participated in the competition. The JV and varsity competitors ran a 3.1 mile course, after the mixed boys’/girls’ 3,200 meter race.
