The Livingston Fire Department was called to 354 Beaufort Avenue on Sunday, August 4, to extinguish a fire in a large pile of wood in the rear yard. The fire was extinguished without incident. In other calls, firefighters responded to three reports of natural gas odors, two of which were traced to a leaking barbecue grill and to a bleach-based cleansing solution. The Fire Department’s other ten calls this past week were false alarms or unfounded reports. Rob Munson, CJM Photos

Election Season is Coming

While we are still firmly entrenched in the dog days of summer, fall is not far away, and with it comes another round of Board of Education and Township Council elections in Livingston. These are both contested elections; now that the filing deadlines have passed, we know there will be six candidates running for various seats.

Four people are running to fill two open seats on the Board of Education. Those candidates are Alyse Berger Heilpern, Seth Cohen, incumbent Samantha Messer, and Sasha Pailet Koff. Board member George Shen, whose seat is expiring at the end of the year, will not be seeking reelection.

Elizabeth Runyan Steiner Hoenig

Article Image Alt Text

Elizabeth Runyan Steiner Hoenig – child of the Great Depression, high school valedictorian, fervent opera lover, diehard New York Giants fan, devoted wife, loving mother, proud Grandma, Nanny and Oma – died peacefully in her sleep at her Crane's Mill home in West Caldwell on Aug. 2, 2019.

Betty, as she was affectionately known to her many friends and family, was predeceased in 2017 by her beloved husband of 67 years, Egon. As Wesley Lovely, her 3-year old great-grandson so wisely said when his mother told him the news, "Well Mama, that means she's with Opa again, right?" Yes, Wes, that's right.

She was undoubtedly at peace with the world because she had returned less than a week earlier from her annual two-week vacation with her family in Ocean Park, Maine, a special place where she had been vacationing her entire life and a legacy which is now being shared by the fifth generation of her family.

Council Approves Study For Performing Arts Center

At the Monday, August 5 Township Council conference meeting, former mayor Eleonore Cohen of the LivingstonArts Council discussed bringing a performing arts center to town.

“We are a community of many things,” Cohen said. “Part of being a great town is offering everything to everybody.”

The “odyssey” of opening a performing arts center began in the ’90s, according to Cohen, and has continued through the years, with road blocks including funding and space continually stalling the project.

Jeff “The Coat Guy” Friedman, founder and director of Livingston Philanthropies, Inc. (LPI), this week expressed his thanks to the “many hundreds of Livingston residents and organizations who have donated thousands of badly needed items, and thousands of dollars toward LPI’s Vehicle Fund.”
In addition, he said, “I want to thank our current and past volunteers. It’s been eight seasons of selflessness, including this summer, with pick-ups and deliveries being handled by LPI’s stalwarts.”
Friedman also “wanted to recognize our loyal partner from the very beginning, Livingston’s West Essex Tribune, and its talented editorial staff.”

Poolside Education

Article Image Alt Text

National Night Out is far from the only community event in which the police department has participated in this summer.

Twice last month, the Livingston Municipal Alliance Committee, in partnership with the Livingston Community Policing division, have hosted special events that sought to bring the community together for some fun and a little information.

Both took place at the Haines pool, on July 18 and 25, and were open to all, not just to members of the pool.
