About 6,000 Livingston Public School students will embark on their first day of the 2019-20 school year onWednesday, September 4.Teachers had begun earlier, attending professional development programs on August 29 and September 3.

Highlights of the official 2019-20 academic calendar, including vacations and holidays, are presented below. For additional details, including partial days for specific grades or conferences, visit livingston.org.

This calendar was most recently amended on July 17, and provides a total of 183 days for students and 187 days for teachers.

CHECKING IT OUT: Children are using the last days of August to get a head start on the new playground equipment at Littell People’s Park, which has a section for two to five year old children and another for five to twelve year old children. Albert Stanley Koczur, formerly of Livingston, died on Tuesday, August 20.

Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, August 29, at 11 a.m. at the Dangler Funeral Home ofWest Orange, 340 Main Street, with visitation at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover.

Mr. Koczur was born and raised in Elizabeth, and served in the U.S. Navy. He earned a degree in civil engineering from Rutgers University and worked as an engineer with the New Jersey Turnpike.

After he retired, Mr. Koczur was caregiver for his wife, Joan, who suffered from MS until she died in 2009. Shortly thereafter, he began suffering from Alzheimer’s and spent his last years at a care facility in Westlake, Ohio, near his son, Christian.

The youngest of ten children, Mr. Koczur is survived by two brothers, Stanley (Erna) and Joseph; his sons, Matthew (Anne) and Christian (Heather); five grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

William W. Frieman, 77, passed away on Tuesday, August 27, 2019 in Livingston, New Jersey, with his loving family by his side.

William was a lifelong resident of Livingston, and graduated from Livingston High School, Class of 1960. He later opened his law practice in South Orange, New Jersey:William F. Frieman, Esq. He retired in 2012 to the Adirondack Mountains in Jay, NewYork, where he loved to spend time.

William is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Diane; his sons, Christopher and his wife Heather, and Daniel and his wife Tammy. He also leaves his adoring grandchildren, Rachel and Eric; as well as his sister, Donna Lyon and her husband John, his cousin, Calvin Williams, and nieces and nephews.

Driving past the Livingston Circle in recent years, it’s easy to not give it much of a thought. It’s a necessary thoroughfare in and out of town, nothing more. The center of the circle was always full of overgrown trees and brush. It wasn’t much to look at, and so most people didn’t. It’s not that the median area circle was unsightly (though with a collection of overgrown grass, weeds and dead trees one could certainly make that argument), but rather it was just not noticeable or memorable as one traveled through Livingston.

Nancy Maceiko (née Hogan) of Livingston, died on Saturday,August 24. She was 62 years old.

A private memorial service was held on Wednesday, August 28.

Mrs. Maceiko was born in Passaic and spent her childhood in West Milford. She was the daughter of the late Donald and Rosemarie Hogan and the sister of the late Danny Hogan. She and her late husband, Edward David Maceiko, lived in Short Hills, where they raised their sons, Evan and Mathew.

She is also survived by her sister, Donna Brady; her sister-in-law, Diane Benjamin and her husband Ray Benjamin; and her brother, Donald Hogan.

The family has noted that donations may be made in Mrs. Maceiko’s name to St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center, P.O. Box 159, Madison, NJ 07940, sthuberts.org/tributegifts.

Zoey the “Hurricane Dog” was loved, Beth Cerullo says, but she has always felt bad, knowing her original human “parents” may never have known what had happened to her.

Zoey was a hurricane “foundling.” The mid-sized tri-color terrier was found outside Saint Barnabas Medical Center by staff members in September, 2004, as Hurricane Ivan raged.

The dog was an escape artist, says Cerullo, who must have run out of her house during the storm. “She kept running away from anyone who initially tried to help her – probably trying to get back home – but she’d always come back, or someone managed to always catch her, eventually,” Cerullo says. On the final “catch,” she was taken to a veterinarian, cleaned up, and cared for.

Labor Day Observed in Livingston:

Livingston Town Hall and all Township offices will be closed on Monday, September 2, in commemoration of the Labor Day holiday.

Garbage Collection

There will be no garbage collection on Monday, September 2. If your normal garbage collection day is Monday, your garbage will be picked up on the next regularly scheduled day, which is Thursday, September 5.
