It was an uneventful Primary Election in Livingston this past Tuesday, June 4, with all but two races, both Democratic and on the county level, going uncontested.

Incumbent Democrat Michael Vieira received 527 votes for Livingston Township Council.

On the Republican side, Brandon Minde received 193 votes for Township Council.

Vieira is currently serving through the end of the year after winning a special election in February to fill the seat of Michael Silverman, who resigned in January. November’s election will be to fill the remaining one year of former councilman Silverman’s term.

Starbucks Application Carried to June 18:

The Livingston Planning Board, at its meeting June 4, continued hearings on two applications that were last heard on May 7.

The Board adjourned an application for a drive-through Starbucks coffee shop on South LivingstonAvenue, and voted to approve an application by Pulte Homes for a townhome development on South Orange Avenue.

The Livingston Board of Education honored Philippe Jallow, the outgoing student representative to the Board, and 11 of the district’s retiring teachers, at its meeting on June 3.

Between these celebrations, Board president Buddy August commented on the passing of longtime township resident, Grace Russo, at age 87. August, a former mayor of the township, said she was one of his favorite people.

“You knew her if you went to Town Hall or the Senior Center,” he said. “Livingston lost a real treasure. She always wanted to know what she could do for you.

“Heaven is much brighter today with her there.”

Eleanore O. Sochor (nee Osman), 94, of Livingston died Saturday, June 1.

Born in Newark to Barry and Marie Osman, Mrs. Sochor moved to Livingston in 1952 with her husband, Rudy, who predeceased her in 2010.

She worked as an executive secretary for most of her career. In addition, she volunteered her time at Saint Barnabas Medical Center for decades, and participated in charity knitting projects.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Sochor was predeceased by her sister, Pearl Sklanka, and her brothers, Herbert and Edward Osman. She is survived by her daughter, Lori Stanko; and two grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are private under the direction of Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, Livingston.

In September, 1904, four grades met in the primary room of District School No. 2 at Northfield Center, where Roosevelt School was later located.

Livingston Philanthropies, Inc. (LPI), is requesting hotel-size toiletries and new cosmetics for distribution to homeless individuals who do not have financial access to the basics of personal hygiene. “As vacation season approaches, many residents will be staying at hotels and resorts,” noted LPI founder and director Jeff Friedman. “It’s been my experience that lots of unused items are readily available to bring home for the ‘poor, homeless, and disenfranchised.’ It’s fun, too!” Friedman added that, “comments like ‘I really need this!’ ‘Thanks for taking care of us,’ ‘This is really for me?’ and ‘God bless You’ are frequent reactions from those who receive toiletries and cosmetics from LPI. And this is all because of the generosity of our Livingston friends and neighbors.” Friedman continued, “All of us try to look our best, including the homeless and the profoundly poor. That’s why new cosmetics, samples and cosmetic gift bags, are especially appreciated by women of all ages.

The sun was shining Monday morning during Livingston's annual Memorial Day observance. Immediately following the ceremony was the parade, which was well attended due to the pleasant weather. Grace Irene Russo (nee Bozza) of Livingston died Monday, May 28. She was 87 years old.

Born and raised in Jersey City to MaryandPasqualeBozza,Mrs.Russo moved to Livingston in 1963.

Over the past 20 years, she worked as an administrative assistant for the Township of Livingston clerk’s office. Formerly, she worked as a paralegal for Foster-Wheeler in Livingston for 25 years, and served as an officer of the Peachtree Credit Union.

Mrs. Russo was widely known for her community service in Livingston, earning numerous awards and recognitions. Her most recent was the President’s Volunteer Award. She was an active member of the Livingston League of Women Voters, and served as its vice president up until her death.

At the Monday, May 20, Board of Education meeting, resident Brian Bradley stated that he and fellow resident Mike Ramer were well within their rights to record the meeting. Ramer had been questioned about filming a student at the previous meeting. Business administrator Steven Robinson agreed that, yes, everyone is legally permitted to record a public meeting. We would have liked him to stop there, but he continued, adding that recording is, however, discouraged by the administration.

But make no mistake: at a public meeting, recording is very much allowed. These laws exist for a reason – open government is good government.
