There will be a funeral Mass today, Thursday, September 27, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church in West Orange for Samuel Christiano of Livingston, who died September 21. Born in Orange, Mr. Christiano was graduated from West Orange High School in 1939. He interrupted his college studies to enlist in 1942 in the United States Army Air Force, and provided weather support for American air operations over occupied France, Normandy, and Nazi Germany. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and received the Army’s European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal. After the war, Mr. Christiano worked in factories and took law classes at night. He received an LL.B. degree from the Fordham University School of Law in 1949, and spent the next 40 years practicing law in New Jersey, including 30 years as attorney for the West Orange Board of Education. At the Monday, September 17 regular meeting of the Livingston Township Council, the Council authorized several contracts and issued four proclamations among its normal business.

Presentations

Kevin Cancino, security official at the Livingston Mall, was honored for helping save the life of a Milburn resident who suffered a medical episode at the mall in March. The Township Council issued a proclamation, and both the man he saved, Murray Bloom, and his wife, Maya, thanked him for taking the action. Family members of both the Blooms and Cancino were present for the presentation. Murray Bloom, an artist, said he is doing much better and drew Cancino a picture as a thank you.

LHS SEMIFINALISTS: Fourteen Livingston High School seniors are among the semifinalists named in the annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented students represent less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors who comprise the 16,000 semifinalists in the 64th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. They will have an opportunity to continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million.

Bill “Doc” Pollak is a Livingston resident for more than 50 years, a retired dentist, and, at 83 years young, a dedicated baseball player. He regularly bounds into the Tribune office with the latest Livingston Dodgers news; they won their 12th consecutive game on August 5. But it was time, the staff felt, for a story just about him and his love of baseball and the people who play the game.

Ball Playing in the ‘Hood

“In grammar school,” Pollak said, “we moved to a neighborhood in Newark where all we did, all day long, was play stoop ball, stick ball, box ball, basketball. It was all we talked about. I guess it’s my second nature.” He said there were lights hanging out of windows, between the houses, and the kids played at night.

SAMS Fine Men’s Clothing may be shutting its doors for good in a little over a month, but that doesn’t mean co-owners Maurice and Jeffrey Cohen plan on slowing down before then. On a recent weekday afternoon, both were helping customers and working the cash registers while residents shopped the store’s “everything must go” retirement sale. It’s that work ethic that has kept the Livingston staple open for decades.

Every family in town seemingly has a SAMS story, from picking out a Bar Mitzvah suit to looking at the creatively-decorated storefront windows through the years.

Isabelle DeLuccia of Livingston is more accustomed to receiving tennis trophies than she is to presenting them, but there she stood, next to Naomi Osaka, the US Open Women’s Champion, as Osaka received her trophy on Saturday, September 8, at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

“It was amazing!” said Isabelle, whose active participation, hard work and sportsmanship in USTA sanctioned events had earned her the invite.

Next Monday, September 24, is National Family Eat Together Day, when loved ones are asked to celebrate by sitting down and sharing a meal. Something that used to seemingly be so simple, having dinner together as a family, gets harder to organize with each passing year, as the demands we put on ourselves continue to mount. From sports practices to religious groups for children, to late nights at work for the adults, finding an hour to spend together each day can be challenging. This day asks us all to put our busy lives on the back burner for a short period of time and take a seat at the table, together.

As highlighted by the Township Council earlier this month, September is National Preparedness Month and we encourage residents to be prepared for potential emergencies.

This is the time of year when Mother Nature sometimes decides to take summer out with a bang by way of hurricanes, or even, in recent years, a freak autumn snowstorm. Aside from some rain, we just avoided the worst of Hurricane Florence; though many further south were not so lucky. In recent years New Jersey has faced its share of catastrophic storms, from Hurricane Irene to superstorm Sandy, and with more than two months left in the Atlantic hurricane season, we are not out of the woods just yet this year.

During the Board of Education meeting on September 17, the Livingston School Board voted to roll the additional state aid it received over the summer, a little more than $866,000, into the current 2018-19 school year budget.

It also approved changes to the Board meeting calendar. The November 12 workshop meeting was cancelled; the November 19 meeting was changed from a voting to a workshop meeting; and a voting meeting on November 26 was added.

A special meeting of the planning board was held at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 18, at Livingston Town Hall.

Applicant St. Barnabas Medical Center presented to the Planning Board a preliminary and final site plan to construct a 90-foot canopy at the East Wing entrance of the existing building. The canopy will allow weather coverage for the drop off area as well as the valet service. Along with the canopy, a larger vestibule is proposed to provide a larger indoor waiting area inside the east wing entrance and a larger automated revolving door consistent with other entrances at the hospital.
