LHS Alumnus Bicycles Cross Country To Get “Pumped Up” for New Venture

Former Livingston resident Leslie (Sher) Gold and her husband, Jeffrey, completed a 60-day cross-country bicycling trip that began on Saturday, March 24, in Long Beach, California, and ended in Livingston on Tuesday, May 22.

As per cycling tradition, the couple dipped the rear wheels of their bicycles in the Pacific Ocean at the start, and the front wheels in the Atlantic Ocean, at Asbury Park, at the end.

Up In Smoke

At Monday’s Township Council meeting, an ordinance was passed to Livingston’s general zoning requirements that will make it difficult for retail businesses with the primary focus of e-cigarettes (or “vaping”) to open in town. The ordinance was first proposed last month and passed this week by a three to one vote of the Council. Councilman Shawn Klein was absent at Monday’s meeting, while Councilman Michael Silverman was the lone member in opposition to the ordinance.

Council Passes Ordinance Banning Vape Shops

Following the introduction of an amendment at last month’s meeting, the Livingston Township Council passed an ordinance prohibiting electronic cigarette or “vaping” shops from opening in town, though the vote was not a unanimous one.

The Council had not met for a regular or conference meeting since June 18, when the ordinance was first introduced. The ordinance amends uses to Article XI general zoning regulations, and it was passed by a three to one vote immediately following a final hearing on the ordinance at Monday’s meeting. Council member Shawn Klein was absent from the meeting.

More Cars Broken Into; Bikes Stolen; Vehicle Stop Results in Drug Charges

Livingston police this week are investigating break-ins into two unlocked cars, and the theft of two bicycles from a Claremont Avenue home. In addition, one of two motor vehicle stops resulted in drug charges being filed against the driver.

Vehicle Break-Ins

Two unlocked cars were broken into in two separate incidents during the same time period.

On July 11, a Glannon Road homeowner called police to report that his 2017 BMW wagon, which had been parked in his driveway, had been broken into and rifled through sometime between 8 p.m. Tuesday evening, July 10, and 8 a.m. Wednesday, July 11.

Hold Service July 21 For Paul B. Coleman

Paul B. Coleman died in his Livingston home on Wednesday, July 11. He was 60 years old. A memorial gathering will be held at Quinn Hopping Funeral Home, 145 East Mt. Pleasant Avenue, Livingston, this Saturday, July 21, from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by a memorial service celebrating his life. Mr. Coleman was the husband of Rebecca Cecchetti Coleman; the father of Brett, Kevin, David, and Shawn Coleman; the son of Mary Lee and the late Richard Elliot; the brother of Lee Coleman and his wife, Lucienne, John Coleman, Chris Coleman and his wife, Katherine, and Dan Coleman and his wife, Decie; the son-in-law of Ralph and Delores Cecchetti; and the brother-in-law of Lawrence and Christine Mumma, Patrice Nelli, and the late Nadina Doughtry. Mr. Coleman was an active member of the Livingston community.

Services Held Monday For Anna SanMartin

Anna Marie SanMartin, 96, of Livingston, died Tuesday, July 10. Funeral services were held at St. Raphael Roman Catholic Church in Livingston on Monday, July 16, followed by interment at St. Gertrude Cemetery in Colonia. Arrangements were by the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home of Livingston. Born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, to Joseph and Anna Evans, Mrs. SanMartin was predeceased by two husbands, Harold Rose and Frank SanMartin; her daughter and son-in-law, Regina and Donald Kambach; and her sister and brother-in-law, Regina and Anthony Bove. She is survived by her daughter, Judy Rose; her son, Michael SanMartin; her stepson, Raymond SanMartin, and his wife, Joann; and nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested that donations in Mrs. SanMartin’s name be made to the Boston Children’s Hospital, 300 Longwood Avenue, Boston, MA 02115.

Hold Service in Phoenix For Charles A. Miller

Charles A. Miller of Phoenix, Arizona, formerly of Newark and Livingston, died Thursday, July 12, in Phoenix. He was 91 years old. Mr. Miller was born on April 19, 1927, to the late Charles J. and Mary (Ohman) Miller in Newark. He was a member of the Class of 1945 at St. Benedict Preparatory School in Newark. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a member of Steamfitters’ Local 475 for over 60 years. In Livingston, Mr. Miller was involved in coaching and umpiring baseball in the Little League and Babe Ruth Leagues. He also was an umpire for the Little League World Series Alumni and participated in the 1970 World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Predeceased by his daughter, Patricia, he is survived by his five children, Robert and his wife, Suri; Margaret and her husband, Michael; Charles and his wife, Michelle; Maureen and her husband, Roger; and Kathleen; three siblings, Elaine Jacobs, Helen Schulties, and James Miller; and six grandchildren.

Graveside Services Held for Max Berlin

Max Berlin of Pompton Plains, formerly of Livingston, died Saturday, July 14, at the age of 98. A graveside service was held Tuesday, July 17, at Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge. Arrangements were handled by Menorah Chapels at Millburn. Mr. Berlin was born in Newark to the late Herman and Rose Berlin. On January 5, 1947, he married Estelle Weiner. He was a graduate of Rutgers University and a certified public accountant. He had his own practice, and worked until the age of 89. As a long-term congregant, Mr. Berlin served as treasurer at Temple Beth Shalom in Livingston. He also served as Grand Chancellor of the Knights of Pythias. Additionally, he was a World War II veteran. Mr. Berlin was preceded in death by a daughter, Helen Barbara Kunz, and a sister, Jane (Berlin) Rittman. Surviving are his wife, Estelle Berlin, and his children, Susan Berlin and Stanley Slaw, and Bruce Berlin and his wife, Andrea Treese Berlin.
