Give to Those Who Give To Us

As most of you who have checked their mailboxes this week know, it’s that time of year when we are asked to contribute a little money to an organization with members who work tirelessly – and for free – to keep us safe: The Livingston First Aid Squad.

Letters announcing the LFAS annual fund drive were mailed at the start of this week. This all-volunteer organization, which is celebrating its 70th year, needs our support. It is important for residents and business owners to realize that its 27 active members are not paid. They are our neighbors and friends, who donate countless hours to be there for us during emergency medical situations, as well as provide many other supports and services to the community. These donation request letters help gather funds to support this priceless service in town.

The 8.392 acre parcel of land is currently owned by the Zheng Yaun International Flagship School, LLC. It is located on Industrial Parkway, and is currently an overgrown field.

Last year, Jeff Friedman, founder of Livingston Philanthropies, Inc. (LPI), learned that many Livingston residents have  old, unused and unwanted furs hanging in their closets, attics, garages and basements.
“Now, LPI offers a solution to family members who want to use the furs to make a difference for those living below the poverty line or out on the streets,” he said.
Livingston’s hometown charity is requesting old and unused furs for its second annual Vintage Fur Sale. “Last year’s event was hugely successful, and LPI is building on that success in 2019, our ninth season of providing for the poor, homeless and disenfranchised,” said Friedman. “Proceeds from the fur sale are used to to buy badly needed items for the homeless and profoundly poor folks.”

A multi-age Riker Hill School “Ramily” of 15 took a 15-mile bike ride in support of the 30th and final NYC Century Bike Tour on Sunday, September 8. The tours were organized by Transportation Alternatives, a bike advocacy group.

The Riker Hill group embraced the Riker Hill School mascot – the ram – and the “Ramily theme” as espoused by school principal Justin Toomey.

“The play on the words’ ‘ram family’ led to the kids’ chanting “We are ramily!’ said parent Rachana Sheth. “So we customized the helmets with ram horns and the Riker Hill slogan, #weareramily.”
