Elaine Alfieri (née Chiarella) of Livingston died on Sunday, August 18. She was born in Orange toThomas and Anna Chiarella.

Mrs. Alfieri was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Ralph, and her sisters, Concetta D’Aries, Vivian Petrillo and Santina Marotta, and her brothers, Michael, Joseph and Thomas Chiarella.

She is survived by her children, Ralph (Linda), Patricia, Kevin (Jennifer), and David; and eight grandchildren.

Viewing will be at Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home in Livingston on Friday, August 23 from 5 to 9 p.m.

A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Philomena Roman Catholic Church on Saturday, August 24 at 10 a.m., followed by entombment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover.

Garrett Whitman, 86, of Morristown, formerly of Livingston, died August 16 at Morristown Medical Center. A funeral service was held at Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston, on Monday, August 19.

Mr. Whitman was born in New York City, and lived in Merrick and Great Neck, Long Island, and Livingston, before moving to Morristown.

He was predeceased by his wife, Sybil, and his brother, Wayne. He is survived by his twin brother, Sheldon, and his wife, Jan; his sister-in-law, Fran; his three sons, Scott, Brad and his wife, Beth, and Glenn and his wife, Debra; and seven grandchildren.

The family has requested that donations be made in Mr. Whitman’s memory to the Oncology Fund at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, 95 Old Short Hills Road, West Orange, NJ 07052.

As summer starts to wind down, hundreds of residents are about to embark on an exciting, and somewhat scary journey: starting college. Some of Livingston’s youth have already left for their new schools, while others will depart from town in the coming weeks. It’s a momentous step, but our young residents are well prepared to head to college, and to succeed, thanks in no small part to their upbringing in this town and its stellar school and support systems.

And don’t forget, students and parents, to stop by Town Hall before heading off to college to register for absentee ballots for November’s elections. For many students, it will be the first time they will be able to cast a vote, and we wouldn’t want any residents missing that opportunity.

Ruthe Nelson of Sunrise, Florida, formerly of Livingston, died August 12. She was 90 years old.

Funeral services were held at the Star of David Chapel in North Lauderdale, Florida, on Friday, August 16.

Ms. Nelson lived in Livingston from 1954 to 1986. She was a homemaker and had worked briefly as a dental hygienist in Livingston. She was active in Musicrafters (the forerunner of the Livingston Community Players).

Ms. Nelson is survived by her children, Lori Rothbard and her husband, Howard; Shari; and Steven; and seven grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Vitas Community Connection Hospice of Broward County, Florida, at vitascommunityconnection.org .

Gerald Lichtenstein, 88, passed away on August 19, 2019, surrounded by his loving family. He lived in Livingston for 54 years, and previously in Elmwood Park.

He was a school administrator for 33 years, retiring from the West Orange Board of Education in 1993. He was also a long term member of the West Orange Rotary and of Temple Beth Shalom.

He was the beloved husband of Marion; loving father of Sheryl, Larry, Stu, Liz, Karen, and Rich; cherished grandfather of Andrew, Megan, Samantha, Matt, Alex, and Karlie; devoted great-grandfather of Nate; and brother of Ray. Jerry’s family was the most important thing to him and he will be missed very much.

A funeral service celebrating Jerry’s life was held on Wednesday, August 21, at Bernheim Apter Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel in Livingston. Burial followed at New Montefiore Cemetery, West Babylon, New York.

Memorial donations may be made in Jerry’s name to the charity of your choice.

School superintendent Dr. Matthew Block, at the August 14 school board meeting, clarified the school district policies and responsibilities that govern elections while also praising the four candidates seeking seats on the board.

“It’s a lot of work, it’s all volunteer, to serve the district and community... kudos to everyone for putting their names forward,” he said.

The district has two policies, 7510 (Use of School Facilities) and 9700 (Special Interest Groups) that deal with elections. These policies restrict the use of school buildings for political events or for political reasons, as well as the handing out of election materials, particularly to students, on school grounds, Block explained.

Livingston police are investigating a burglary at a Chadwick Road resident that was reported at 9:52 a.m. on Monday, August 19.

According to police, the exact timing of the burglary was unclear, as the house was empty and the homeowners were away on vacation. The family’s nanny arrived on Monday morning to check on the house, and discovered it had been entered and ransacked.

Police discovered an unlocked door, but the exact circumstances surrounding the burglary were still under investigation at press time. Pending a complete inventory by the family, a television is known to be missing.

It’s not too early to donate unused coats and winter accessories to Livingston Philanthropies, Inc. (LPI), notes LPI founder and director Jeff Friedman. “I’m sorry to say it, but jacket and coat season is just around the corner!”
Although it’s quite warm this week, he continues, “Crisp fall evenings when we reach for our long-lost fall outerwear are coming. Those favorite jackets and coats are waiting to emerge on the first cool evening, perhaps in September.
“LPI, whose mission is ‘providing for the poor, homeless, and disenfranchised,’ respectfully requests your continued and generous donations of warm jackets and coats, including gloves, scarves and winter hats.”

Two thunderstorms in two days – on Wednesday and Thursday, August 7 and 8 – took down trees, caused brief but extensive flooding, and resulted in temporary power outages throughout the township. Storm clean-up delayed the opening of Northland Pool on Thursday until 2:30 p.m.

The more severe storms took place on Wednesday afternoon, with 3½ inches of rain falling within a one-hour period, according to Mike Anello, superintendent of the Livingston Department of Public Works. The downpour resulted in flooding of local brooks,sewersystems, and streets.
