After decades of going unused, the flag pole that sits outside the LivingstonAnimal Shelter will finally serve its purpose once again, thanks to some passionate employees and volunteer work.

Animal Control Officer Jim Salvadore said he was tired of looking at the rusted pole, and he and some fellow employees decided that now was the time to fix it up.

“I’m a military guy, I’m a Navy vet, and I’ve wanted to get the POW flag and American flag up there for years, but it’s always been too rusted,” Salvadore said. “I’ve been an employee here for 35 years and there’s never been a flag.”

Highlighting Livingston Philanthropies’ Partners: LPI and Willing Heart Community Center: A Long-Time Partnership to Aid the Homeless

Article Image Alt Text

In a continuing series of articles focusing on the distribution partners of Livingston Philanthropies, Inc. (LPI), this week LPI founder and director Jeff Friedman highlights the Willing Heart Community Care Center in Newark.
“As I’m often asked about the final destinations of generous Livingston donations, I’m pleased to share this profile of the Willing Heart Community Care Center, one of Newark’s most prolific non-profits,” said Friedman. “Willing Heart’s hands-on mission is to feed, clothe and counsel the homeless and extremely poor.”
Willing Heart’s roots are based in Metropolitan Baptist Church, which has been serving Newark for over 75 years. In June of 2008, the church expanded its goal of “revitalizing and rebuilding” the lives of its congregants to also encompass the citizens of Newark that live beyond the church structure.

Firing Up The Fireworks

It’s that time of year again: Fourth of July is just a week away, and the celebrating will likely start as soon as this weekend, with plenty of grilling and chilling, and more than a few fireworks to celebrate our nation’s independence.

Now that many fireworks can be purchased right down the street at area retailers, backyard displays will likely pop up during the evening hours in the coming days. Non-aerial fireworks, including sparklers, poppers, and snappers (nothing that “explodes”), may now be legally sold in New Jersey, and it is a safe bet that some more heavy duty options will mysteriously find their way into a few backyards as well.
