Lancer Lacrosse Kick-Off

LANCER LACROSSE KICK-OFF: On Monday evening, March 25, the Livingston High School boys’ lacrosse team gathered for its annual player kick-off dinner, which was provided by Pizzetta Enoteca. The Lancers had a home game on Wednesday (results were not available at press time) and will play at home again this Friday, March 29, at 4 p.m. on the LHS turf. Edda Kaufman

Beloved Mother & Grandmother Formerly of Livingston

Edda Kaufman, 92, formerly of Livingston, passed away March 26 surrounded by her loving family.

Edda was born in Philadelphia and was a Livingston resident for 25 years before moving to West Orange.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 27, at Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge.

Mrs. Kaufman was predeceased by her husband, devoting her life to raising her two young boys.

Edda was a legal secretary. She had many hobbies and interests. Always with a book by her side, she was an avid reader. She was also an artist, with many of her works displayed at local art shows. Other interests included golf, hiking, and travel. Being a grandmother to Samantha and Alex was her greatest joy.

Edda was the devoted mother of Andy (Gina), Bob (Lori); proud grandmother of Samantha (Andy), and Alex.

LHS Graduate Frank Schwindel to Play In Major Leagues for Kansas City Royals

According to an unofficial announcement by Kansas City Royals Hall of Famer George Brett, Frank Schwindel, a 2010 graduate of Livingston High School has made the roster of the Royals’ Major League team.

During a broadcast of the Royals’ exhibition finale against Triple-A Omaha, on Monday, March 25, Brett said Schwindel had told him he will be part of the Royals’ Major League roster. The official roster was not released before the Tribune’s press deadline.

Schwindel, captain of the 2010 Livingston High School varsity baseball team, was drafted to the Royals’ minor league division from St. John’s University in 2013.

Offer Mass Saturday For Antoinette Carlucci

Antoinette Carlucci died in Livingston on Tuesday, March 26. She was 88 years old.

Mrs. Carlucci was predeceased by her husband, Anselmo “John;” her son, John; and her son-in-law, Edward Frank. She is survived by her children Rosemarie Frank, David, and James and his wife, Gina; and three grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Friday, March 29, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home of Livingston. A funeral Mass will be offered on Saturday, March 30, at 10 a.m. at St. Philomena Church, Livingston, with interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover.

Fire Department Training Drill

FIRE DEPARTMENT TRAINING DRILL: On Tuesday night, March 19, members of the Livingston Fire Department held a training exercise in “Enclosed Parking Garage Operations,” reviewing tactics and procedures for fighting vehicle fires in enclosed parking structures. The drill was conducted at Building 3 of the Park-Vue Heights residential complex located off Eisenhower Parkway. Services Held March 17 For Milton Schaeffer

Milton Schaeffer of Livingston died March 14. He was 89 years old.

Born in Newark, he had also lived in West Orange before moving to Livingston 49 years ago.

Mr. Schaeffer was a teacher for the Newark school system for 13 years and for the Maplewood and South Orange School District for another 27 years before retiring. His 40 year career in education included serving in positions such as acting principal of the South Orange Middle School and English Department chairman.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

AWorld Chess Federation player, he was involved in and organized camping for children.

He is survived by his wife of over 52 years, Geri; his son, Matt; his daughter, Talya (Matthew Cheng); two sisters, Lillian Gruber and Florence Grossman; and one grandchild.

Felix Beck Dies In Florida at 93

Felix Beck, 93 of Boca Raton, Florida, formerly of Livingston, N.J. passed peacefully on March 26, 2019. A funeral will be held on Friday, March 29, at 11:30 am at Bernheim Apter Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, 68 Old Short Hills Road, Livingston, NJ.

Felix Beck was Chairman Emeritus of Chase Home Finance from 1994 to 2009. He was Chairman and CEO of Margaretten Financial, a mortgage banking firm, listed on the NYSE from 1992 to 1994 and before that was Chairman and CEO of Margaretten, a subsidiary of Berg Enterprises since 1969. From 1957 to 1969, he was Executive Vice President of J.I. Kislak Mortgage Corporation.

Martin Slatin Dies In Livingston Home

Martin M. Slatin died in his Livingston home on March 22. He was 93 years old.

A funeral service was held at Menorah Chapels at Millburn in Union on Tuesday, March 27, followed by interment in Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge.

Mr. Slatin was a Provision salesman and member of Local 345-50, employed with Best Provision for 36 years. Born in Newark, he graduated from West Side High School in 1943.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After his discharge, Mr. Slatin returned to New York University (NYU) to finish his education. Shortly thereafter he met his wife of 67 years, Myrna Herman. They lived in Verona for 50 years, raising three children, Craig, Shelly and Marla.

He was active with NNJ Power Squadron and the Shark River Coast Guard Auxiliary, teaching boat safety and participating in safety patrols. He and his wife belonged to Temple Beth Tikvah in Wayne.

Mass Was Celebrated For Sara Ferrara, 98

Funeral services for Sara Ferrara of Livingston were held on Saturday, March 23, at St. Philomena R.C. Church. She died on Tuesday, March 19.

Born in Newark to Vincent and Stella Russo, Mrs. Ferrara was active in the church community and was a past president of the Livingston Women’s Club.

She was predeceased by her husband, James, and her siblings, Anna, Anthony and Stella.

She is survived by her sons, James (Eileen), and Russell (Susan); and two grandchildren.

Standing with New Zealand

No, this is not a rerun, though we’ve written these words too many times. After Parkland, after the Capital Gazette, after Pittsburgh, all just last year alone.And now after the Christchurch mosque shootings in New Zealand earlier this month.

Last Saturday, March 23, about 100 people gathered at the Knights of Columbus building on Eisenhower Parkway where Jamiah Masjid Livingston held a service and prayer session for the 50 people killed and 50 more injured in two terrorist attacks at mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand.
