It is that time of year again. The leaves are beginning to change, the air is a bit crisper, and everything from coffee to hand soap has the faint smell of pumpkin spice. We are talking, of course, about flu season.

While seasonal influenza viruses are detected year-round, they are most common in the fall and winter. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, everyone older than six months should get a flu vaccine every “flu season” to help prevent the contraction and spread of the virus.

The Livingston Fire Department’s annual Open House, its principal effort to educate the public about fire safety, will be held this Sunday, October 7, from 1 to 5 p.m. at its headquarters station on South Livingston Avenue. The free, family-friendly event is held in conjunction with Fire Prevention Week. This year’s theme is “Be Aware. Fire Can Happen Anywhere.”

The key message of this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign is that individuals should take a good look around their homes to identify places fire could start. If you identify potential risks, address the problems immediately, and if necessary, have a qualified professional correct any hazards.

The Livingston Police Department and the Friends of the Livingston Animal Shelter have invited residents to attend the Livingston Animal Shelter’s open house this Saturday, October 6. The open house will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the shelter, 81 Naylon Avenue in Livingston. Onstreet parking is available.

Those attending will learn about the shelter’s recently completed renovations and the township’s Trap-Neuter-Return program. Light refreshments will be served.

Victoria Valente, 76, of Hyde Park, New York and a former 20-year resident of Livingston, died on October 1. Visitation will be held on Friday, October 5, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Reilly Bonner Funeral Home in Belmar. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, October 6, at Saint Catharine R.C. Church in Spring Lake. Mrs. Valente was an office manager for Con-Ov-Air-Corp. in East Brunswick for over 30 years, She was born in Portugal and moved to Elizabeth as a young girl. She also lived in Durham, North Carolina and Naples, Florida. She moved to Hyde Park, where she helped her daughter manage a bed and breakfast, in 2013. Mrs. Valente was predeceased by her sister and brother-in-law, Aurora and Walter MacFarlane. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Victor Valente; and her daughter, Valerie Valente and her partner, Eric Miller.

The Livingston Lancer varsity football team improved its record to 2-1 after an impressive 43-0 victory over Newark East Side. “Livingston’s offense and defense played flawlessly,” noted coach Robert Breschard. “Despite many great performances in recent years, this marked Livingston’s first shut-out since 2015. The Lancers’ hard work during their bye-week was evident, as they continued their tremendous teamwork. With the victory against Newark East Side, the Lancers have not lost a home game since September 23, 2017.

Newark public safety director Anthony F. Ambrose has announced that a warrant has been issued for the arrest of Max Perlmutter, 80, of Livingston, on charges of terroristic threats in connection with an incident that occurred on Wednesday, September 12.

At approximately 9 p.m., in the 200-block of Lyons Avenue in Newark, an unidentified victim and Perlmutter had a verbal confrontation. Perlmutter then threatened the victim, who reported the incident to police.”

MOTORCYCLE CLUB VISITS SHINING STARS: The Livingston Horseneck Motorcycle Riding Club hosted its second annual rally with the Shining Stars on Saturday, September 22, at Monmouth Court Community Center. More than a dozen Shining Stars, another dozen Horseneck Motorcycle members, five teen volunteers, and the five members of the Township Council participated.

Livingston resident Darren Prince, who makes his living promoting celebrity clients like Dennis Rodman, Hulk Hogan, and Earvin “Magic” Johnson, has just published a book about his 20-year addiction, his path to sobriety, and his work as a recovery advocate.

Aiming High: How a Prominent Sports and Celebrity Agent Hit Bottom at the Top “is already a certified best seller on Amazon,” Prince said proudly. The 1988 Livingston High School graduate spoke to the Tribune in the Livingston office of Prince Media Group (PMG). He grew up on Deal Lane with his mom, Andrea, his late dad, Martin, and his sister, Stacey, who was graduated from LHS in 1986.

It's election season again. In these turbulent times, with everyone seeming to have an intense feeling about politics and politicians, we all seem to be more fixated on candidates and issues than ever before. Livingston is fortunate to have contested elections this year for both the Township Council – five candidates for three seats – and the Board of Education, which has four hopefuls for two openings.
