Fire Department Responds To Downed Wires

During the course of a quiet week during which most of the calls were false alarms, the Livingston Fire Department responded to two reports of downed wires.

On Sunday, July 22, fire officials went to 31 Knollwood Drive on a report of wires hanging low in the roadway. They found the wires to be telecommunications wires, and notified Verizon of the problem.

Learning and Exploring at LPS Summer Academy

Livingston students are using some of their summer break to explore new ideas, refresh their academic knowledge, and refocus on their personal interests at the the Livingston Public Schools Summer Academy.

The Academy is held at Livingston High School and offers small, intensive classes that range from academic courses to enrichment and artistic instruction.

PREPARING FOR REPLACEMENT TURF: With removal of the artificial turf completed at the LHS Football Field, work has now started preparing the field for the replacement turf. Shown above, the field is being rolled on Monday, July 23. On Wednesday, the new turf was at the high school in bags, awaiting installation.

Volunteering is a Family Thing

VOLUNTEERING IS A FAMILY THING: Ella Lombardo, shown here, and her brother, Will, recently got together with their grandmother, Joyce Friedman, a board member of, and active volunteer with, Livingston Philanthropies, Inc., to create special gift bags for children. The gift bags are slated for distribution at St. John’s Soup Kitchen in Newark, where the Lombardo siblings will also assist stocking the shelves in the food pantry.

Diversity Concert

Those saddened that the Diversity Festival was not part of this year’s Youth Appreciation Celebration (formerly Youth Appreciation Week) received good news at Monday’s Township Council conference meeting. A new diversity-focused music festival will take its place this fall at the West Essex YMCA.

Connected Trails

At the Monday, July 23, Township Council conference meeting, Rich Cornell, chairman of the Trails and Greenways Committee, presented a plan to establish a connected series of trails around Livingston’s 14 square miles. The plan would connect the township’s existing trails and incorporate use of the Passaic River.

We believe this is a fantastic idea that our residents would make great use of should it come to fruition.

Township Council Approves New Diversity Festival, Discusses Connecting Trails, Door-to-Door Sellers

In a two-hour Township Council conference meeting, held Monday, July 23, at Town Hall, the Council approved a new diversity concert and discussed connecting walking trails within the township among other business.

Diversity Festival

Susan Burkenbush and Alan Karpas, on behalf of the Youth Appreciation Committee, West Essex YMCA, and the Livingston Committee for Diversity and Inclusion, requested the Council allocate $5,000 for a “Love+Unity Diversity Festival,” to be held this September at the YMCA.

Livingston Summer Concert Series Concludes July 29 with B Street Band

The 2018 Livingston Summer Concert Series, sponsored by Regal Bank, will conclude this Sunday, July 29, with the B-Street Band, a Bruce Springsteen tribute band. The concert will be held at the Gazebo on the Oval, and will begin at 7 p.m.

Picnic food and lawn games will be available. Those attending are encouraged to take along blankets or lawn chairs to sit on. In the event of inclement weather, the show will take place in the auditorium at Livingston High School.

Crystal Plaza Expansion Approved

The Livingston Zoning Board of Adjustment, at its meeting on Tuesday, July 24, approved an application by the Crystal Plaza to expand the catering facility, which is located at 305 West Northfield Road, in the R-3 residential zone.

The applicant plans an expansion and renovation of the existing facility, including a 5,202 square foot expansion of the existing structure (2,845 square feet along the southern corner of the building, and 1,412 square feet along the front side of the building, and a canopy covering an area of 945 square feet). The parking area will be expanded slightly. Modifications to the existing storm water management system will be made, along with new landscaping and lighting improvements.

Funeral Services Held For Robert E. Slater

Former Livingston resident Robert E. Slater died Saturday, July 21, at his home in Mendham after a long illness. He was 78. Funeral services were held at Temple B’nai Abraham in Livingston on Monday, July 23, under the direction of the Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. The son of Louis and Emily Slater, Mr. Slater was born in Newark on July 6, 1940. He was a 1958 graduate of Columbia High School in South Orange, where he became a New Jersey state diving champion, and was inducted into the Columbia High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007. In 1962, he was graduated from Lehigh University, where he became an Eastern United States diving champion. After college, Mr. Slater served as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army from 1962 to 1964. A former resident of Short Hills and Livingston, Mr. Slater had lived in Mendham since 2001. He was the chairman of LRF Slater Companies, Inc. of Livingston, which owns Nero’s Grille.
