Wires Down, Transformer Fire, Truck Fire, Gas Leak: A Busy Tuesday for the Livingston Fire Department

Tuesday, July 9, was an unusually busy day for the Livingston Fire Department, which responded to a dump truck accident that took down three utility poles; a transformer fire; a garbage truck fire; and a gas leak, all before noon.

The morning began with a general alarm which sounded at about 5 a.m. A Mack dump truck, owned by Smith Sondy Construction of Wallington, struck wires during an overnight repaving project on South Orange Avenue, causing extensive traffic delays throughout the day.

Resident Creates Website & Facebook Page For Livingston Philanthropies, Inc.

Prompted by an article in the Tribune, Livingston Philanthropies Inc. (LPI) has a new website and Facebook page, thanks to Livingston resident Allison Eglow.
Noted LPI founder and director Jeff Friedman, “In a recent June issue of the Tribune, Livingston’s publication of record, I asked for volunteers of all types – which we still need. Now in about a week’s time, LPI enjoys a brand-new, beautifully designed website and fun Facebook page, because of the hard work and creative skills of Livingston resident Allison Eglow. Allison is a junior majoring in human computer interaction at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in Newark.”
He explained, “Allison’s mom, my friend, generous LPI donor and Livingston resident Penny Taylor, read about our need for a website in the Tribune article. ‘My daughter is interested in helping with your website,’ she told me. ‘She goes to NJIT. Any interest?’ Any interest? I think so!

Mass Was Celebrated For Mary Claire Owens

Mary Claire Owens (née Gower) died on June 30 at the Brandwine Living in Livingston. Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, she lived in Newark and North Arlington before moving to Livingston two years ago. She was 84 years old.

Mrs. Owens retired 20 years ago from the Norpak Corporation in Newark.

She was predeceased by her husband, Edward, and is survived by her children, Debbie and Edward Owens, and Michelle Bogart; her sister, Esther Owens; and four grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated on July 2 in Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in North Arlington.

Contributions in Mrs. Owens’ memory may be made to the ARC of Essex County, 123 Naylon Ave., Livingston, NJ 07039 (attention: Bridges Program).

Bike Team Completes Challenging Event

Livingston’s IndoBikers team participated in a ride that is known for its challenging elevations and distances in Hudson Valley, New York. Ajay Bansal, Krishna Maridi, Yash Chaudhary and 11-year-old Yuvaraj Chaudhary finished the 55-mile ride, climbing 3000 feet of elevation. The 75-mile finishers include Jitesh Toshniwal, Rahul Hukeri and Ketan Bhuptani, who climbed 5000 feet to successfully complete the ride. Dodgers Split Doubleheader with N.J. Royals

In a battle for first place in the U.S. Over Thirty Baseball league, the Livingston Dodgers split a doubleheader with the New Jersey Royals. The Royals took the first game, 7-2, and the Dodgers captured the nightcap, 13-6.

Former Dodger Adam Slater won the first game on the mound for the Royals, scattering eight hits and walking none. The Dodgers’ only runs came in the first inning. Frank Moretti singled and went to third on a failed pick-off attempt. He scored on a Troy Evans ground-out. Rob Pettigrew had two hits for the Dodgers. Pitcher Craig Marsden took the loss on the mound.

Scott Mitchell Perry

Scott Mitchell Perry, 68, passed away peacefully at his home in Port St. Lucie, Florida, onTuesday evening, June 25, 2019.

He is survived by his two sons, Jonathan and Jason; his two fur grandchildren, Togo and Giglio; his cousins, Richie and Debbie; and his children of the Guardian ad Litem program of South Florida; as well as many close friends and extended family.

Born in New York, New York and raised in New Rochelle, New York, Scott was the son of Julius and Shirley Perry. Scott and his wife, Carol, were long-time residents of Livingston, New Jersey.

Hebe L. Backiel

Hebe L. Backiel passed away peacefully, after a brief illness, on June 27, 2019 in Stamford, Connecticut, with her children by her side. She was 99 years old.

Hebe was born May 19, 1920 in Watkins Glen, New York to Duncan and Florence Parks. She graduated from Hofstra University, where she met her husband-to-be, Stephen A. Backiel, her spouse of 58 years. After four-year stints in Brooklyn, Mineola, New York, and Greenville, South Carolina, they moved to Livingston in 1956, where they raised their family and lived for almost 45 years.

Hebe thrived as a full-time homemaker and a loving and supportive mother, grandmother, and greatgrandmother, who always put her family first.

Basement Fire Damages Pine Valley Rd. Home

The Livingston Fire Department responded to a general alarm at 6:01 p.m. on Monday evening, July 1, which turned out to be a basement fire at 39 Pine Valley Road. Fortunately, no injuries were incurred.

According to Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Francione, the fire was confined to the home’s basement.The basement suffered fire damage, and the first and second floors of the house sustained smoke damage.

The house belongs to Christopher and Donna Barker. According to fire officials, Donna Barker and the couple’s son were home, and escaped the house unharmed.

Police, Animal Control Explain How to Deal With Foxes, Coyotes

Rise in Sightings:

If you have seen a fox in your neighborhood in the last few weeks, you are not alone. But don’t worry; there’s no reason to panic, according to officials.

Livingston’s police department and animal control have been inundated with calls and reports of “wild animals” roaming through township streets and backyards. Calls have specifically concerned sightings of foxes and coyotes. Animal Control Officer Jim Salvadore said these sightings are nothing out of the ordinary, and while residents should always use caution, they should not be concerned.

Town to Celebrate Independence Day

Livingston’s 83rd annual 4th of July Celebration on Thursday, July 4 will start at 9 a.m. and provide a full day of activities, leading up to the fireworks show at 9:15 p.m. Contingency plans have been made in case of rain.

Car Show

The township’s celebration will feature the 26th annual Auto Show, assisted by the Natural Glass Corvette Club. Patrons may vote for their favorite cars, and trophies will be awarded to the top-voted vehicles.

Patriotic Ceremony

At 10 a.m., the Patriotic Ceremony at Haines Pool will provide the “official kick-off” to the day. The ceremony will include participation by the American Legion, the Girl Scouts, the Jewish War Veterans, the Boy Scouts, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and its Auxiliary, and the Livingston Township Council. Following that brief ceremony, the Kiwanis Swim Karnival will begin.
