Funeral Held Nov. 29 For Irwin Halper

Irwin Halper of Verona, formerly of Livingston, died Wednesday, November 28. Funeral services were held the following day at Temple B’nai Abraham in Livingston, followed by interment at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge. Arrangements were under the direction of the Bernheim Apter Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. He was the founder of I. Halper Paper and Supplies of Bayonne. Mr. Halper was the husband of Vicki Halper and his late wife, Donna Halper; the father of Tara Halper and Jaret Keller, Matthew and Erin Halper, and Andrew and Heather Halper; the stepfather of Justin and Tali Panetz, and Heather Panetz; the brother of Robert Halper, Jane and Steven Eisenstat, and Carol and Arthur Amster; and the grandfather of eight.

Funeral Mass Sat. For Albert Romano

Albert J. Romano, 84, died Sunday, December 2, in Livingston. Visitation will be held Saturday, December 8, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Quinn- Hopping Funeral Home, Livingston. The funeral Mass will be offered on Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Raphael Roman Catholic Church, Livingston, with entombment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover. Born and raised in the Bronx, New York, Mr. Romano had been a resident of Livingston for the past 56 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He later attended the Pratt Institute in New York, then worked for Allied Chemical and Merck Pharmaceutical. Mr. Romano was predeceased by his wife, Joan, and his sister, Francesca Kokoszka. He is survived by his children, Albert, Joan, John, Stephen, Robert, and James; his sister, Leonarda Neilson; and ten grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Junior Olympic Runner

Jordan Fleishman, 12, son of Amy and David Fleischman of Livingston, competed in the USA Track and Field Regional Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships on November 18 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He finished with a time of 12:15 on an uphill three kilometer course and qualified for the USATF Junior Olympic National Championships in Reno, Nevada.

Council to Vote for Street Name; Resolutions Pass

At the start of the Township Council conference meeting on Monday, December 3, the Council discussed submissions for the renaming of Formosa Plastics Road.

“We had a lot of choices, a lot of participation,” mayor Ed Meinhardt said. “Some very interesting and nice suggestions.”

Specific names were not discussed, but each Council member agreed to submit a ranking of their top three choices to township manager Barry Lewis, who would then determine the winner based on which name received the most votes. The new name is expected to be announced on January 1, 2019, at the township’s reorganization meeting.

Valencia Xu of Livingston Wins USTA National Indoor Title

Coming off a finals appearance at the US Tennis Association (USTA) 16s National Clay Court Championships this summer, Valencia Xu of Livingston defeated San Marino, California native Anessa Lee, 6-2, 6-2, to win the Girls’ 18s singles title at the Racquet Club of Memphis in Memphis, Tennessee last week.

Valencia, 15 years old and a sophomore at Livingston High School, has won consecutive USTA National Indoor Championship Titles after winning the Girls’ 14s singles title a year ago.

Camuso Display Open

The Camuso Elves gave the West Essex Tribune a preview of the Camuso Display at the Livingston Oval on Tuesday, December 4. Because of inclement weather, opening ceremonies at the Camuso Holiday display, including the Christmas tree lighting, have been rescheduled to this Saturday, December 8. The evening will also include a visit from Santa Claus, sponsored by UNICO, along with Clydesdale horses, family wagon rides, pony rides, and a petting zoo. The following Saturday, the Livingston Fire Department and Livingston First Aid Squad will host an activity night. The display will be open throughout December.

Camuso Display Is Underway

While opening night may have been canceled due to inclement weather, Livingston’s annual Camuso Holiday Display, featuring activities and Christmas and Chanukah displays for all ages, is now up and running through the end of the month at the Livingston Oval, weather and ground conditions permitting. The display will be open on weekdays from 5 to 9 p.m., and on weekends from 5 to 10 p.m. It will be closed next Monday and Tuesday, December 10 and 11.

Public School District Thanks First Responders for Assistance

Opening the November 26 Livingston Board of Education meeting, president Pam Chirls expressed the Board’s appreciation for the work done by Livingston police, fire and public works personnel during “the very difficult weather pattern” on November 15.

“We wanted to have you here tonight to express our appreciation for keeping our children safe, warm, and fed,” Chirls said.
