Continues Hearing Application For Gas Station & Convenience Store

The Livingston Zoning Board of Adjustment, at a special meeting on Tuesday evening, July 31, continued hearing an application by New Jersey Energy Corporation to redevelop the property at 226 West Northfield Road into a gas station and a Chestnut Mart convenience store. The lot, located at the intersection of West Northfield Road and Hillside Avenue, was once home to a gas station, now closed; however, the property is located within the R-3 residential zone, where such a use is not permitted. The hearing was continued from a January meeting.

National Night Out to Include Many Family-Oriented Events

Livingston’s National Night Out will take place on August 7. The national event, explains Offi cer Kevin Mullaney of the Livingston Police Department’s Community Policing Unit, is designed to strengthen neighborhoods through police-community partnerships. “The goal is to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, and build support and participation in local anti-crime programs,” he said. “Most importantly, it represents the kind of spirit, energy and determination that is helping to make many neighborhoods safer places to live.”

Waste Industries Now Collects Recycling; Zones, Pick-up Schedules Unchanged

As of yesterday, Wednesday, August 1, Livingston’s recycling is being collected by Waste Industries, LLC, which is also the township’s garbage collection vendor.

Weekly recycling pick-ups by previous vendor Giordano Companies ceased at the end of the day on Tuesday, July 31. However, the change will not affect what items residents should leave out for recycling collection or when.

Mass Offered Tuesday For Mary Siccardi, 97

Former Livingston resident Mary Siccardi died Wednesday, July 25, at the age of 97. Visitation took place Monday, July 30, at the Codey and Jones Funeral Home of Caldwell. A funeral Mass was offered at Our lady of the Valley Roman Catholic Church, Caldwell, on Tuesday, July 31. Interment followed at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover. To extend condolences or share a memory, visit codeyjonesfh.com. Born and raised in Orange, Mrs. Siccardi lived in West Orange before moving to Livingston in 1998. She was an employment supervisor for 18 years with Liberty Mutual Insurance Company before her retirement in 1985. She was predeceased by her husband, Frederick Sr., and her siblings, Anna DiGisi and Anthony, Edward, Louis, Alfred, and Joseph Florio. Surviving are her children, Luana McDonnell and her husband, Robert; Joseph Siccardi; Sandra Stein and her husband, John, and Frederick Siccardi Jr.; and four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Robert Modlinger, M.D.

Dr. Robert S. Modlinger, M.D. succumbed on Monday, July 23, 2018, at age 72 following a long illness. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and later resided in Manhattan and Riverdale, Livingston, N.J., and Springfield, N.J. Dr. Modlinger attended Columbia University and Cornell University Medical College and did his medical residency and fellowship in endocrinology at Mount Sinai Hospital. Dr. Modlinger was chief of hypertension at the Veterans’ Administration Hospital in East Orange; assistant clinical professor of medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey; and chief of endocrinology at Mountainside Hospital in Montclair. He was a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Endocrinology. He did clinical research and authored several scientific papers, and had a private practice in endocrinology in the Caldwell and West Orange areas. Dr.

Leo M. Silverberg

Leo M. Silverberg died July 30, 2018, surrounded by his loved ones. He was 98. Born and raised in Paterson, he lived in Livingston for the past 66 years. Leo was a tax specialist CPA and partner for M.R. Weiser and Company in Manhattan, retiring when he was 75 years old. He graduated from New York University, magna cum laude, with a Bachelor of Science degree from the School of Commerce, Accounts and Finance. Leo was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Irene (Salz), and is survived by his children, Ilene Silverberg-Keslin and her husband, Michael, and Howard Silverberg and his wife, Melinda; and three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Services Were Held for Rosalind Schaeffer, 98

Services were held July 6 for Rosalind (Roz) Schaeffer, who died on June 29. Born and raised in Newark, she lived for many years in Livingston and then in Hollywood and Hallandale, Florida, for almost 30 years. She moved to Topeka, Kansas several years ago. Mrs. Schaeffer graduated from South Side High School, Newark, and received a teaching degree from Newark State Teachers College. She taught for several years, later working in the physical therapy department at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston and as a personal shopper. Predeceased by her husband of 74 years, Jerry, in 2017, she is survived by her three sons, David (Bobbi) of Topeka, Peter (Liz) of Nantucket, Massachusetts, and Kevin (Pat) of Roseland; ten grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Marshuetz Named Next Police Chief; Will Assume Position in September

At the end of the Monday, July 23, Township Council conference meeting, township manager Barry Lewis formally announced his intention to hire Gary Marshuetz as the Livingston Police Department’s next chief.

Marshuetz was recently promoted from Captain to Acting Chief when Chief Craig Handschuch announced his intention to retire at the end of the summer. Handschuch has been using accumulated paid time off this summer leading up to his retirement at the end of August.

Fire Department Responds To Downed Wires

During the course of a quiet week during which most of the calls were false alarms, the Livingston Fire Department responded to two reports of downed wires.

On Sunday, July 22, fire officials went to 31 Knollwood Drive on a report of wires hanging low in the roadway. They found the wires to be telecommunications wires, and notified Verizon of the problem.
