BRINGING HOME MEDALS: Eliot Vishnevsky of Livingston took first place in the standing long jump, and second place in the 50 meter run, at the Essex County Spring Games held on May 9 at Brookdale Park in Bloomfield. “Eliot worked hard this winter in our Special Olympics track and field class, which covered running, throwing and jumping,” commented Jennifer Quirk, the township’s adaptive recreation coordinator and director of its Shining Stars program.

The photographs of Livingston resident Dominick Notare have been selected for display in the one-day Contemporary Art Show sponsored by the M1-5 Lounge at 52 Walker Street in New York City on June 7. A 2007 graduate of Livingston High School, he holds a bachelor’s degree in photography from Kean University and a master’s degree in photography from the Academy of Art University. He is currently completing an internship at the Leila Heller Gallery in New York City.

Notare’s work may also be seen in Little Egg Harbor Township, where selections from his “Horrors in Fashion” photography series are on display in Salon Do or Dye.

The American Division of the Super Essex Conference (SEC) contested its track and field championships at Newark School Stadium on Friday, May 11. The contest saw seven teams battling to be named champion of the toughest division in the conference.

The Lancers, after a tough loss to East Orange, 75-65, on May 9, arrived at the facility, prepared to do their best. “In this championship meet, the scoring toward the title is done by placing in the top six in an event,” explained coach Dave Czeizinger. “The individual is awarded points in the order 10-8-6-4-2-1 according to his finish, first through sixth place.”

An intense thunderstorm accompanied by high winds and torrential rain swept through Livingston at about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, bringing down electrical wires, trees and tree branches, and causing power outages throughout the township.

Fire Chief Chris Mullin reported a number of downed trees – one of which he personally cut up himself to free a blocked lane of traffic on West Mt. Pleasant Avenue.

Council members discussed the impending selection of an energy aggregator, plans for the upcoming Pride Month, and road improvements at the Monday, May 14 Township Council conference meeting.

Bob Chilton, executive vice president of Gabel Associates, briefed the Council on what to expect next week when he presents his recommendations for Livingston’s energy aggregation program.

When the new school year begins, David Cohen, the Livingston school district’s athletic director, will return to teaching students with disabilities at Livingston High School.

A replacement for the athletic director position has not yet been named.

“The past three years have given me the opportunity to work with the Board of Education and administrative team to provide a great athletic experience for student athletes in Livingston,” Cohen said in a prepared statement. He said it has been “eye opening” to witness the commitment and resources that the Board of Education and township dedicate to both high school and youth sports in town.

Arthur “Pop” Bergman, 90, died at home on May 7. Raised in the Bronx, New York, he lived in Livingston for 36 years and then in Roseland for 20 years. Mr. Bergman served in the US Army National Guard, achieving the rank of First Lieutenant. He was president of BC Enterprises Demolition Company and a charter member of the National Association of Demolition Contractors. After retiring, he worked as a crossing guard in Livingston for 12 years. Mr. Bergman was pre-deceased by his brother, Martin Bergman, and his son, Rusty Bergman. He is survived by Lee, his wife of almost 65 years; his brother, Kenneth Bergman; his daughter Allyson (John) Fryhoff; his three sons, Mark (Betsy), Joe (Lisa), and Scott (Rachael); his eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Donations in Mr. Bergman’s memory may be made to JCC MetroWest Margulies Senior Center; JCC MetroWest Special Needs Services; the ARC of Essex County, or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Eileen (neé Flarity) Loftus died on May 7 at Sunnyside Manor Nursing Home in Wall after a lengthy illness. Born in Newark and raised in Livingston, Mrs. Loftus resided in Manasquan for the past 21 years. She worked as an environmental scientist for AECOM Corporation of Piscataway. Predeceased by her parents, Frank and Veronica Flarity, Mrs. Loftus is survived by Scott Loftus, her husband of 20 years; and her brother, Thomas, and his wife Angela. The funeral Mass was held on May 12 at St. Denis Church in Manasquan. Condolences may be sent to the family at renderfamilyhome.net.
