Municipal Budget Passes at Council Meeting

Livingston’s 2018 municipal budget officially passed at the Monday, May 7, Township Council meeting.

The budget was approved in full following a public hearing on a few final items that had been tabled to discuss following the April 23 meeting. The hearing was specifically open to state-recommended changes to the budget.

Under the approved budget, the tax rate will increase by 1.3 percent, a tax increase of $37.53 for the average Livingston home. The final items did not change this figure.

Thomas Crawford Succumbs to Cancer

Thomas Crawford of West Palm Beach, Florida, formerly of Livingston, died on April 15 at the Gerstenberg Hopice Center. Born in the Bronx, New York, in 1954, Mr. Crawford was adopted and spent his early years in Livingston and North Caldwell. He moved to Florida with his parents in 1976. Mr. Crawford had a learning disability and held a variety of jobs in manufacturing, retail and restaurant service. He was predeceased by his parents, Wilmer “Bill” Crawford and Marjorie “Marge” Crawford (neé Bromley). He is survived by his brother, Peter and his wife, Trish Keryley, and a nephew and nieces. A Funeral Mass will be held for Mr. Crawford on Friday, June 1, at 10 a.m., at Notre Dame of Mount Carmel Church, 75 Ridgedale Avenue, Cedar Knolls. A memorial will be held in West Palm Beach at a later date. The family suggests that contributions may be made to a local chapter of the Special Olympics or the Arc; or for colon cancer awareness and research; or a local animal shelter.

Will Hold Visitation For Raymond Watson

Raymond Watson, 82, a longtime resident of Livingston, died on Saturday, May 5. He was born in Elizabeth and raised in Roselle and East Orange. Mr. Watson was a retired steamfitter for Local 475 and served as a job site foreman for many years. Mr. Watson was predeceased by his wife, Joan M. Watson; his sister, Nola Murray, and a grandson. He is survived by his three children, Kathleen Vincent and her husband, Domonick, of Little Falls; Lauren Damurjian and her husband, Kenneth, of Brick; and Raymond Watson, Jr. and partner Lori Montanye of Livingston. He also leaves three siblings, Claire Honeker of Mendham, Robert Watson of Union, and William Watson of Branchburg; and three grandchildren. Visitation will be held Friday, May 11, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home in Livingston. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sandy Hook Foundation (sandyhookfoundation.com), 84 Mercer Road, Lighthouse Keeper’s Quarters, Fort Hancock, NJ 07732.

Eric Whiteman

Eric Whiteman passed away on April 8, 2018; his final resting place will be in Montana where he loved hiking and photographing. A memorial service will be held today, May 10, in the chapel at The Masonic Home, at 10:30 a.m.. Eric was the son of Edythe and Walter Whiteman and brother to Ralph of West Palm Beach, Florida, and the late Malcolm of Warrington, Pennsylvania. He also leaves two nieces and two nephews and his beloved sister-law, Viola. He had a closely knit extended family who were all very special to him as he was to them. Eric’s parents moved to Livingston in 1939 where Eric lived until moving to The Masonic Home in Burlington, New Jersey in 2004. He graduated from Livingston High School in 1961 and was a member of Trinity Covenant Church and the Camera Club. He also served on the local board of the Partnership for People with Disabilities. Many in Livingston regarded Eric as “The Walker” as he was often seen walking in preparation to traveling and hiking.

Jack Maloof

Jack Abraham Maloof, 71, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2018. Jack was born August 19, 1946 and grew up in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey. He graduated from Rutgers University in 1968. Shortly after graduating first in his class from John Marshall Law School, Jack established a successful defense practice in 1975. In 2014, he joined a prominent law firm, which then became Braff, Harris, Sukoneck & Maloof. As an experienced litigator handling lawsuits filed against insurance companies and their insureds, Jack’s unique style and commanding personality made him a successful lawyer. He was also an avid golfer and loved Long Beach Island. Jack was married to the love of his life, Marilyn, for 49 years. They lived in Livingston where they raised their three children.

Services Were Held For Esther Fisher

Esther Fisher of Livingston died April 13. Funeral services were held on Monday, April 16, at the Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel in Livingston. Mrs. Fisher was born March 17, 1927, in New Britain, Connecticut. She later moved to Newark, and attended Weequahic High School. She was graduated from Ohio State University. She majored in and taught Spanish. Predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Arthur, Mrs. Fisher is survived by her children, Nancy and David Waldenberg of Livingston, and David and Sharon Fisher of Olney, Maryland; her sister, Ruth Tenner; and six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The family has suggested that contributions in her memory be made to Oheb Shalom Congregation, 170 Scotland Road, South Orange, NJ 07079.

Helen Wrubel

Helen V. Wrubel, 109, of Livingston passed away on Saturday, May 5, 2018. Born in Long Island, New York to Joseph and Mary Wojtowicz. Helen was a devout parishioner of St. Philomena Roman Catholic Church in Livingston, and a member of their Rosary Alter Society. Helen was also an avid gardener. She was an active member in the Livingston AARP chapter, and enjoyed calling bingo at the Cedar Street Commons where she was a resident. Helen was the beloved wife of the late John Wrubel; loving mother of Carole Beller and her husband, Gary, and Thomas Wrubel and his wife, Theda Levitt; cherished grandmother of Jessie Beller and her husband, Scott Calidas; adoring great-grandmother of Zoe Alice Beller Calidas; and dear aunt to many loving nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held today, Thursday, May 10, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, 145 E. Mt. Pleasant Ave., Livingston. The funeral Mass will be Friday, May 11, at 10 a.m.at St.

Kiwanis Karnival Coming to Town

The Livingston Kiwanis Club’s annual Kiwanis Karnival will be held from Tuesday, May 8, through Saturday, May 12, at the Kiwanis Fairgrounds on East Northfield Road.

The event is the service organization’s biggest fundraiser, according to Kiwanis Club secretary Michael Pollack. It will feature rides, games and food for people of all ages.

In addition, the Kiwanis Club holds “Arc Day” at the Karnival each year.

SHINING A LIGHT TO LEAD THE WAY: To accommodate a steady rain on Monday evening, seats were moved inside the gazebo for Livingston’s annual autism awareness event. Lanterns provided by members of the Heritage School Builders Club helped illuminate the program and, later, the group’s traditional walk around the Oval.

Woman Rescued From Sideways SUV After Crash

A Plainfield woman was rescued from her overturned Land Rover by Livingston first responders, who cut through her windshield to rescue her Monday afternoon.

At about 2:48 p.m. Monday, April 30, Livingston Police officers responded to a report of a two-vehicle accident on East Northfield Road near East Cedar Street.
