Man Charged with Arson in Car Fire

A car was purposely set ablaze in the middle of the night, and a man who hit a pole was charged with leaving the scene of the crash this week, according to Livingston Police.

Criminal Mischief on Devonshire

A Rockaway man was charged with arson after police stated he intentionally set fire to the car of an acquaintance last weekend.

Lancer Wrestlers Win SEC Liberty Division

After going 8-13 last season, the Lancer wrestlers continued their bounce-back season and finished undefeated in the Super Essex Conference. They also earned the third seed in the North Jersey Group 5 state sectional tournament. Livingston clinched the Division Championship by topping Montclair and Glen Ridge last week. The outstanding wrestling of co-captains Anthony Petrillo, Matt Nichter and Kenny Newman have enabled the Lancers to dominate their local matches.

B’nai Abraham Rabbi Is Arrested at DACA Protest

Rabbi Faith Joy Dantowitz of Livingston’s Temple B’nai Abraham was one of six people arrested Monday in an act of civil disobedience after the group had gathered at congressman Leonard Lance’s Westfield office to protest the possible deportation of DACA recipients, undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children.

Lady Lancers Split Games

LADY LANCERS SPLIT GAMES: The Livingston High School varsity girls’ basketball team split two games in recent action. The Lady Lancers lost to Bloomfield Tech, 58-42, on Tuesday, January 30, at home in the LHS Fitness and Wellness Center. The team then rebounded with a 49-16 victory over Irvington on Saturday, February 3, in the an Essex County Tournament game.

Be Informed About School Budget

A first look at the 2018-19 school budget was introduced by the district this week.

With the new federal tax bill threatening to challenge household budgets, especially in high-taxed states like New Jersey, Livingston residents are wondering how the school budget will affect their taxes. Several have cautioned the Board of Education to be more cognizant of the taxpayers’ concerns this year.

Continuing a Livingston Legacy

This past weekend, hundreds of people cycled all day long at Equinox gym in Summit, raising more than $1.4 million for rare cancer research as part of Cycle for Survival. Students and survivors joined together in a celebration of life, honoring the Livingston resident who launched the event by collecting money for her cause.

Planning Board Approves Subdivision Applications

The Livingston Planning Board met on Tuesday evening, February 6, to hear two applications for subdivisions of residential properties. The first, for 73 North Livingston Avenue, was formally approved; the second, for 284 West Hobart Gap Road, was informally approved, and will be formally voted upon at the Board’s March 20 meeting.

73 North Livingston Avenue

Applicant George Reinhardt presented an application for a minor subdivision with variances at 73 North Livingston Avenue. Reinhardt proposed to subdivide Lot 28 to create two new lots, and requested variances for lot width. The first lot will be about 29,992 square feet and would contain the existing home on the property; the second lot will be about 10,290 square feet. The property is located a few hundred feet north of Beverly Road.

2018-19 School Budget is Introduced

The first draft of the 2018-19 school budget was introduced by district business administrator Steven Robinson at the school board’s February 5 meeting.

Without knowing the amount of state aid, Robinson declined to release a tax impact. He did note that ratables are up $75 million, which he said will “absolutely help offset the tax impact of this budget.”

Services Held Feb. 2 For Norma D. Greene

Norma Diana Greene died in her Livingston home on January 31. She was 79 years old. Services were held on Friday, February 2, at the Bernheim-Apter- Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Mrs. Greene attended Midwood High School and the University of Michigan, from which she graduated in 1959 with a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education. She was an employee of the West Orange school district for decades, teaching at both Gregory Elementary School and Roosevelt Middle School. After her retirement from teaching, she supervised student teachers at Caldwell University. Mrs. Greene is survived by her husband of 56 years, Leonard; her daughter, Jennifer (Dan); her son, Peter (Susan); and four grandchildren. The family has suggested that memorial contributions be made to CASANA (the Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North America) and the Saint Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Center.
