The Livingston Planning Board met on Tuesday, January 21, to discuss two hearings for property on Scott Terrace.

The first hearing was a minor subdivision with variances, at the corner of East McClellan Avenue and Scott Terrace for applicant JMZ Enterprises. The applicant sought to subdivide lot 21 to create four new lots that measure approximately 14,484 square feet, 10,691 square feet, 11,171 square feet and 18,616 square feet, respectively. They also want to increase the footprint size and storage volume of the new surface detention basin to incorporate the original Scott Terrace subdivision, which will eliminate the previously approved underground detention basin from beneath the roadway.

More than a dozen unlocked cars were burglarized last weekend in the same area of the township, according to Livingston Police.

Officers took reports of 15 unlocked cars being broken into on Sunday, January 19. Officers first responded to a 2 a.m. 911 call from a resident on Fellswood Drive, who reported seeing two men pulling on the door handles of cars parked in his driveway. The resident initially shouted out to the men and then called the police. The caller told police that the suspects had left in the direction of Greenwood Court.

It was a “Day On” this past Monday, January 20, at the Livingston Senior/ Community Center, where the annual Day of Service was held on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Several hundred people attended the three-hour event, which encouraged residents to make the most of their time off for the holiday, “A Day On, Not a Day Off.”

“This gets larger every year,” mayor Rudy Fernandez said. “Thank you to the volunteers for making a difference in our neighbors’ lives.”

“That’s what we need, we need more volunteerism,” councilman Michael Vieira said. “Just as we celebrate Martin Luther King Day, let’s celebrate volunteerism in Livingston.”

In his weekly update on Livingston Philanthropies, Inc. (LPI), founder and director Jeff Friedman noted, “Collins Elementary School fourth and fifth-graders proved that the ‘giving season’ wasn’t over at the end of 2019’s holiday season.”
Under the auspices of the Student Council and PTO parent volunteer Sherri Lynn Marrache, LPI was presented with more than 100 warm coats and bags of winter accessories by the Collins students who collected them. “Just in time for the frigid temperatures,” said Jeff Friedman.
Along with coats dropped at the offices of the West Essex Tribune, LPI volunteers delivered a total of 162 garments, along with hats, gloves and scarves, to long-time distribution associate Willing Heart Community Care Center in Newark. Willing Heart immediately distributed the needed warmth at no cost to the homeless and profoundly poor through its Clothing Boutique.

Joan (née Jordan) Lyons died in her sleep on January 12.

Mrs. Lyons was born in Irvington and grew up in Millburn and lived in Livingston before retiring to Mantoloking.

She graduated Wells College in Aurora, New York, and served in leadership roles with the United Way and other charitable endeavors.

Predeceased by her husband, Harold, she is survived by her three children, Leigh, Chris, and Peter Lyons, and her grandchildren.

Viewing will be today, Thursday, January 16, from 4 to 8 p.m., and the funeral will be tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Weatherhead Young Funeral Home, 885 Mantoloking Road in Brick. Burial will take place Friday at 11:30 a.m., for family and close friends, at St. Stephen’s Cemetery, in Millburn.

Faye Lazega Stern, born inBrussels, Belgium, passed away in Livingston, New Jersey, on January1, 2020, at the age of 88.

She was the beloved mother of Evie Singer and Ron Felton; mother-in-law to Ron Singer and Linda Felton; and the grandmother of Jamie Singer, Andrew Singer, and Josh Felton.

Faye lived an amazing life, walking across the Pyrenees Mountains during the Holocaust and taking care of her two siblings when she was only 12 years old. Her mother eventually made it to the United States and lived until the age of 95.

Faye was a talented chef, baker, knitter, and art gallery owner at the Fountainbleu Hotel and South Beach Miami Beach.

Donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to the Comfort Project 360 Scarf Program at Saint Barnabas Medical Center.

While we briefly mentioned this in last week’s editorial, we wish to take another moment to commend all those who participated in the somewhat impromptu march down South Livingston Avenue earlier this month.

The march, which was designed to show solidarity following recent hateful and anti-Semitic incidents, was held at the same time as a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge which attracted tens of thousands of people. Livingston’s march was in conjunction with that one, organized because residents Brandon and Claudia Minde wished to participate, but did not want to take their young children to the crowded New York City event. So they decided the day before the march to plan a small walk in their own hometown, Livingston.

Many years ago, when the Board of Education announced plans to close schools in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday, we strenuously objected. We believed – and continue to do so – that our students could learn more about Dr. King and his ideals in school than they would having a day off.

But then, some time ago, one of our readers, Patricia Idrobo, came up with the idea of creating "A Day On, Not A Day Off.” She organized many community groups and mobilized a cadre of kids to go to the high school cafeteria to perform a variety of community services and it was a great success. The cafeteria was filled with tables at which people were working on behalf of others. It was a joy to see and helped to demonstrate to our children the lessons Dr. King taught. At the end of the collection, there was also a brief educational component which helped to teach Dr. King's ideals.
