Board Approves Synagogue Sign; Solar Energy Array; Lot Subdivision

The Livingston Planning Board approved three applications at a special meeting on Tuesday evening, February 19. All three applicants were represented by attorney Stephen Geffner, and engineer and planner Michael Lanzafama testified in two of the three matters.

Synagogue Signage

Ahavat Torah at 650 South Orange Avenue was granted permission to install internally-illuminated identification signage on the synagogue’s facade. Variances were sought for the sign’s height and overall area, and for its location on the building itself.

Geffner noted that the proposed signage, which will feature a flame and Jerusalem stone with the words “Chabad Center for Jewish Life,” will “complete the facade.”

Vieira Voted Next Council Member

Article Image Alt Text

After hearing Scott Goldman, Laurie Kahn and Michael Vieira each speak, members of the Livingston Democratic County Committee held a blind vote and named Vieira the township’s next Council member.

The Livingston Democratic Committee originally selected the three nominees mid-January, presenting the names to the Township Council, who were then to select the new member. The four Council members did not reach a unanimous decision and instead chose to send the vote back to the Committee for a final vote, which was held on Wednesday, February 13.

Of the 51 Committee members, 39 were present for the vote, with one abstaining from the selection. Vieira received the most votes by a significant margin. Prior to the vote, according to those in the room, all three candidates pledged to stay active within the party moving forward, regardless of the result.

Board Hears Suggestions On Improving Parking

During the conference portion of its meeting on Tuesday, February 19, the Livingston Planning Board heard a presentation from representatives of the Business Improvement District (BID) on parking in the township.

MichaelTobia, planning consultant for the BID, reviewed a letter the BID had recently sent to the Planning Board outlining recommendations for improving commercial parking in town. These recommendations, he said, are based in large part on examination of parking ordinances and requirements in other local municipalities.

Parking Requirements

Tobia noted that some of Livingston’s current parking requirements, such as those for restaurants, are appropriate, and the BID suggests no changes. Others, however, he described as “onerous,” particularly requirements for beauty salons, health and fitness facilities, and medical offices. Livingston’s ordinance, he noted, requires up to three times more parking for such uses than other towns do.

To the members of our volunteer fire department, thank you for answering more than 1,300 calls in 2018, at all hours of the day, and in all types of weather.

Up to the Task

Last week, the Livingston Police Department, along with the Essex County prosecutor’s office and eight other local police departments in the western part of the county, announced the formation of a joint task force, designed to battle crime in the area.

The task force is, in part, a response to the rise in reported vehicle break-ins and thefts in Livingston, as well as neighboring towns, in the past year-plus.

Credit goes to these agencies for taking a proactive approach to these crimes, and for recognizing that this is a trend and not a coincidental spike in break-ins that could be attributable to a small sample size. The frequency of these crimes should drop, hopefully very soon, because they are being acknowledged as such.
