Opening the November 26 Livingston Board of Education meeting, president Pam Chirls expressed the Board’s appreciation for the work done by Livingston police, fire and public works personnel during “the very difficult weather pattern” on November 15.

“We wanted to have you here tonight to express our appreciation for keeping our children safe, warm, and fed,” Chirls said.

The Camuso Holiday Display will open for the season on Saturday, December 1. Opening festivities will begin at 6:30 p.m. Lights will be turned on at 7 p.m.

According to “Chief Elf” Tom Cooney, “We will have a train ride for the kids sponsored by Schumacher Chevrolet, and we have a very special appearance by Optimus Prime the Transformer and Wonder Woman! There will be dancing, posing for pictures and much more! Don’t miss it!”

GOODHART DRIVE SEWER PROJECT: Portions of Goodhart Drive were being worked on earlier this week as part of the town’s sanitary sewer main improvement project on that street. The work involved placement of a temporary asphalt patch over a roadway trench dug for the recently installed sanitary sewer main, which replaced old piping, in the vicinity of Camelot Drive. Shown above, on Monday, November 26, crews from Black Rock Enterprises, a subcontractor of M.S.P. Construction Corporation, milled the roadway in preparation for paving, which was done the following day.

Livingston Township’s 2018 Leaf Collection Program is continuing, with leaves currently being picked up in Section 3. The township has been divided into three sections for collection.

Section 1 comprises the area north of East and West Mt. Pleasant Avenue; Section 2 comprises the area south of East and West Mt. Pleasant Avenues and north of East and West Northfield Roads; and Section 3 comprises the area south of East and West Northfield Roads and West Mt. Pleasant Avenue, west of the traffic circle.

Livingston residents Oishik Mukherjee and Shiv Kulkarni competed in the 21st annual North American Table Tennis Teams Tournament over the Thanksgiving weekend. The event, sponsored by Joola, was held at the Gaylord Convention Center in Washington, D.C.

Said to be the largest of its kind, the three-day competition features players from all over the United States, as well as entrants from around the world, giving players a chance to compete at a global level. Approximately 300 teams, with over 1,000 players, at all levels, participated this year.

The elections are over and our Board of Education and Township Council continue to devote untold hours in the performance of their duties, which include making decisions on controversial issues. As volunteers who give considerable time and service to these administrative bodies, they are often passionate about the issues that come before them. The community members who attend the meetings of these organizations are often equally passionate about the topics being discussed, and that passion can sometimes make us lose sight of how we react to others.

Two weeks later, many of us are still having nightmares about our commute home during the season’s first (and horribly memorable) snowstorm on November 15. The conditions were awful, and fast-falling snow in greater quantities than anticipated resulted in miserable road conditions and hours of gridlock. In the end, the November 15 storm served as a not-so-subtle reminder for all of us that it’s time to prepare for the winter. It’s not coming, folks. It’s already here.

Livingston police arrested a New York City woman who attempted to steal a wallet from a Saint Barnabas physician on Wednesday, November 21.

SBMC security personnel called Livingston Police at 12:37 p.m. to report that they were following a theft suspect on foot, out of the hospital and onto Old Short Hills Road. The female suspect was later identified as Jamilia Jordon, age 32, of New York City.

Funeral services will be conducted for Billie Friedberg on Friday, November 30, at 11:30 a.m. at the Menorah Chapels at Millburn, 2950 Vauxhall Road in Union. Born in Newark, Mrs. Friedberg lived in Livingston and West Orange and was an administrative assistant for Mooney General Paper Company in Hillside. She was the wife of the late Saul Friedberg; the mother of Steve Friedberg, Jill Lange, and Lisa Friedberg; the sister of Gary Riemer; and a grandmother and great-grandmother.
