A Difficult Year Ahead

Both the Township Council and the Board of Education held their annual re-organization meetings this week. The Town Council hosted its annual meeting and reception on Monday morning, while the Board of Education held its first meeting of the new year on Tuesday evening. We may have just stepped into 2018, but our Town Councilmen and Board of Education members are already looking toward the future and this year town officials will have to deal with some new unknowns.

Drive Sober

The Livingston Police Department is presently participating in New Jersey’s annual end-of-the-year “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign. The effort will continue through Monday, January 1.

While law enforcement officials are always on the look-out for drivers who may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, this program aims to increase awareness about the issue during what is known as one of the most dangerous times of year on the road due to the holiday celebrations that may involve alcohol.

Welcome Feedback

The Township Council announced this week that Good Energy will make a presentation about energy aggregation at the Council’s regular meeting on Monday, December 18, at 8 p.m. Mayor Shawn Klein specifically asked that the Tribune publish the information so that residents know they have the opportunity to ask questions and/or make comments on the topic, which is a brand new idea for Livingston. We think this is a testament to the Council’s wish to remain transparent and accessible, especially when it comes to decisions that impact all residents.

Can They Find You?

We consistently praise Livingston’s emergency personnel and first responders, such as our police officers, firefighters and first aiders. The problem is, no matter how wonderful and competent they are, they cannot help you in times of an emergency if they cannot find you.

Can They See You?

At the Township Council’s meeting on Monday evening, a concerned resident brought up how important it is that people who walk, run, or bike be visible to drivers. With Daylight Savings Time no longer in effect, our hours of being “out and about” in the dark have increased. In addition, at this time of the year, piles of fallen leaves often force people to walk, run, or bike further out into the roadway. Pedestrians and cyclists should use the utmost caution when they are out in the evening, at dusk or dawn, or during inclement weather, when a driver’s ability to see may be negatively affected.

To Err Is Human

For this portion of the editorial, we will begin with the famous quote by Alexander Pope –“To err is human, to forgive divine.” Last week, we erred and hope you will forgive us!

First, a Tribune employee noticed, after we went to press, that we used a Passover banner on the cover of Section C. Our publisher had a great idea to “turn lemons into lemonade” by offering readers, via Facebook, an opportunity to be included in a prize drawing if they were able to find the mistake.

Not to Be Outdone

It may seem like we toot their horns a lot, but the Camuso Holiday Display “elves,” (the volunteers who make Livingston’s annual display quite spectacular), deserve kudos. With no other exhibit of its kind in the immediate area, the Camuso elves do not have to out-do anyone – except themselves. And they continue to do so each year.

Be Thankful

After going on about safety measures and violence, it is a good time to remind everyone that while we should all be vigilant about protecting ourselves and our community, we should also take the time to consciously be thankful for all of the good that surrounds us. There is no better place to do that than at the annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Celebration, to be held this Sunday, November 19, at 5 p.m. at St. Philomena Roman Catholic Church.

In This Day and Age...

People attending meetings of the Livingston Township Council will now have to go through a metal detector prior to entering the conference room or Council chambers at Town Hall. Monday evening marked the first appearance and use of the security checkpoint, which was located outside the conference room where the meeting was held at 7:30 p.m.

Keep the Lights On

The Livingston Community Players (LCP), a long-time Livingston theater group, has appealed to the township for funding to keep the group from “going dark” – a theater term for closing down. There has to be a way to keep this from happening. A non-profit organization that has provided quality community theater to the township for more than seven decades (under a few different monikers) should be cherished.
