Mary E. (Topsy) McCormick

Mary E. (Topsy) McCormick (née Glennon) passed away March 1, 2020. Topsy was born in Newark, NJ in 1933, the daughter of Joseph A. Glennon, Jr. and Catherine Donahue Glennon. Raised in East Orange, she graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Montclair, NJ in 1951. She earned her RN at St. Michael’s School of Nursing, where she was class president, graduating in 1955. In 1956, she married Thomas J. McCormick and they settled in Livingston in 1961. There she and her husband were among the founding members of St. Raphael’s parish. She was active in many parish activities including the Rosary Altar Society and was one of the founders of its Girl Scout troop. Topsy spent many hours volunteering with the Livingston National Little League and was a past president of the St. Raphael’s Seniors’ Group. She was an avid traveler and proud of her Irish heritage, traveling many times to Ireland where she visited friends and family. Topsy began her nursing career working as a staff nurse at St. Michael’s Hospital. She was later the Assistant Director of Nursing at Columbus Redwood Nursing Home and became the Director of Nursing there before becoming the Director of Nursing at East Orange Nursing Home, retiring in 1996. Topsy was predeceased by her husband and is survived by her five children, Kathleen McCormick Campi and her husband, Vincent; Patricia Guild and her husband, Bill; Thomas McCormick, Jr. and his wife, Patricia; Kevin and his wife, Peggy; and Mary. She was cherished by her grandchildren, Ryan and Brendan Campi; Billy (Maggie), Brian (Jeanine), and Bobby (Maggie) Guild; Kate (Ellen) and Thomas McCormick; Meghan (Jeff), Tara (Matt) and Kevin, Jr. (Aubrey) McCormick; and her great-grandchildren Claire, Olivia, Aubrey, Teddy, Amelia and Nora. Topsy is also survived by her brother, Thomas Glennon. Visitation was held on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 3 and 4, at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, 145 East Mt. Pleasant Avenue, Livingston. The Funeral Mass was offered on Thursday, March 5, at St. Raphael’s Church, Livingston, followed by interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Topsy’s memory to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or Smile Train. ...
