Graveside Services Held For Edward Scherer, 89

Edward Scherer of Apollo Beach, Florida, formerly of Livingston, died June 27. He was 89 years old. Graveside services were held at Mount Lebanon Cemetery, Iselin, on Sunday, July 1, with arrangements by the Menorah Chapels, Union. Mr. Scherer had lived in Livingston and Springfield before moving to Florida. He was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Arlene; his son, Hal; and his sister, Marilyn Brooks. He is survived by his partner of 20 years, Geri; his daughter, Sheri Grunwerg (Steven); his sister, Sheila Krell; and two grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren. The family has noted that memorial contributions may be made to the Joshua Harr Shane Foundation, 5 Hidden Springs Lane, East Windsor, NJ 08520.

Funeral This Friday For Mario Del Gaudio

Mario Del Gaudio, 86, of Springfield, Missouri, a former longtime Livingston resident, died Saturday, June 30. Visitation will be held today, Thursday, July 5, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Paul Ippolito-Dancy Memorial in Caldwell. The funeral will be held at St. Philomena Roman Catholic Church, Livingston, on Friday, July 6, at 11:30 a.m., followed by the entombment at Gate of Heaven Mausoleum, East Hanover. Born in Lucera, Italy, on January 29, 1932, Mr. Del Gaudio came to the U.S. in 1956, and in 1958 married Ida Panzano Del Gaudio, who died in 1991. He owned homes in Lake Parsippany, Verona, Orange, Livingston, and West Orange. He moved to Springfi eld 14 years ago, where he had a companion, Pina Waring. Before retiring in his mid-60s, he was a bricklayer with the Bricklayers, Masons and Plasters Union Local 13, Newark. Mr.

The sun was shining on Livingston High School during the Class of 2018 graduation ceremony, which was held last Thursday, June 21, on the athletic field. 498 students received their diplomas under beautiful blue skies, as friends and family looked on. Inside this edition of the Tribune is our annual graduation section, a keepsake piece featuring candid photos of the commencement ceremony and pictures of all of the graduates, along with the text of the speeches made. Celebrate Golden Anniversary

Michael and Roslyn Fink of East Sherbrooke Parkway celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this week. The two, who have lived in Livingston since 1971, were married at the Short Hills Caterers in Millburn on June 27, 1968.

The couple has three sons, Sanford; Eric and his wife, Marni; and Rob and his wife, Beth; and five grandchildren, Jordan, Ryan, Samantha, Emma and Marley.

Louis Farer Is Essex County Scholar Athlete

Senior bowler Louis Farer was honored this spring as the recipient of the Essex County Athletic Directors Association Scholar Athlete Award.

This award honors a senior athlete each year who excels both in athletic competition and in the classroom.

As a captain on the bowling team, Farer was one of Essex County’s best, leading the Lancers to a second place fi nish in the Essex County Tournament. In the tournament, he rolled a 625 series which was good enough to qualify him for the County Individual Championships where he placed seventh. His leadership and performance were instrumental in leading the Lancer bowlers to multiple championships throughout his career, said athletic director David Cohen.

Two “Gabbies” Clinch World Gymnastics Titles

Two Livingston girls named Gabby – Gabby Lederman, nine, and Gabby Gruber, ten – traveled to Orlando, Florida to represent Go For the Gold Gymnastics of Whippany in the USAIGC/IAIGC (United States Association of Independent Gymnastics Clubs/International Association of Independent Gymnastics Clubs) competition. The event was held at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress the weekend of June 23.

The gymnasts participated in four contests, floor exercise, balance beam, vault and uneven bars. Each event is scored out of ten and the scores on all four events are combined to determine the gymnasts’ all-around scores.

UNUSUAL FIRE DEPARTMENT DRILL: The Livingston Fire Department holds weekly car accident rescue training drills; but one held recently behind the Circle Firehouse was, said Fire Chief Chris Mullin, “a little out of the ordinary.” Having access to a huge pile of wood chips, fire instructors led an “off-road” extrication drill to present additional challenges and teach different techniques for extricating victims from crashed vehicles.

Livingston Summer Concert Series Will Kick Off July 1 with “Cameos”

The 2018 Livingston Summer Concert Series, sponsored by Regal Bank, will kick off on Sunday, July 1, with the Cameos, a doo-wop band.

The series features live musical performances every Sunday evening in July from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Memorial Park gazebo.

Each week features a different genre of music, including doo-wop, Big Band arrangements, ’80s hits, and tributes to the band Chicago and Bruce Springsteen.

Two Vehicles Stolen Last Week; Man Charged with Assault

In this week’s Livingston Police blotter, officers investigated two stolen vehicles, a reported robbery at a West Mt. Pleasant Ave. gas station, and one man is facing drug charges following a random stop at a checkpoint in town.

Stolen Vehicles

Sometime between June 14 and June 21, a 2007 Ford van was stolen from a business at 1 Naylon Place, where several vehicles were parked for construction.

The owner told officers that he did not realize the vehicle had been stolen until he was notified by Newark Police officers, who had recovered the van in Newark.

Funeral Mass Offered For Michael Bennett

Michael Bennett, 74, died in his Livingston home on Wednesday, June 20. Visitation was held Friday, June 22, at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home of Livingston. A funeral Mass was offered Saturday, June 23, at St. Philomena Roman Catholic Church, Livingston, with interment following at St. Vincent’s Cemetery, Madison. Born in Somerset, Pennsylvania, Mr. Bennett grew up in Brooklyn, New York, and raised his family in Huntington Station, New York. He lived there for 40 years before moving to New Jersey. He was a graduate of Brooklyn College, where he was a member of ZBT fraternity. He worked as a school psychologist for the Commack school district for 38 years. He also had a private practice in Plainview, New York, for over 30 years. Mr. Bennett is survived by his wife of 45 years, Shirley; his children, Kathryn Bennett (Andrew Zoltan) and Julie Bennett (Alexis Rathborne); and two grandchildren.
