William P. Holey of Livingston, New Jersey, a retired Newark, New Jersey firefighter, age 90, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 13, 2020.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Philomena Church, 396 South LivingstonAvenue, Livingston, New Jersey, on Wednesday, December 16, 2020. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery East Hanover, New Jersey.

William was a retired Newark firefighter serving the city of Newark for 25 years before his retirement in 1985.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving his country proudly during the Korean War.

Predeceased by his beloved wife, Shirley Holey, William is survived by his devoted children, Patricia (Joseph) Calafiore, William (Karen) Holey, Kenneth Holey; James (Sarah) Holey, and Kathleen (Jerel) DeBellonia; his loving grandchildren, Patrick, Joseph, Jessica, Bryan, Michael, Sean, Ethan, Justin, Ryan, Quinn, and Danny; and his dear sister, Dolores Lyons.

Betty M. Foster, a long-time resident of Livingston, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on December 14, 2020.

Relatives and close friends are invited for a funeral ceremony on Saturday, December 19, 2020 at St. Giles Chapel in Restland Memorial Park, 77 Deforest Avenue, East Hanover, New Jersey, at 11:30 a.m.

Betty was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and lived in Newark, New Jersey, before moving to Livingston in 1960. She moved to Roseland, New Jersey, in 2015 and lived there since then.

Betty, affectionately called Liz by family and friends, was an operator for Bell Telephone before becoming a nurse at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston. She later became a Reservation Agent for Eastern Airlines.

Herbert J. Mitschele Jr., 91, of Sunrise of Basking Ridge, NJ, formerly ofFar Hills, NJ, died suddenly and peacefully in his home, next to his wife, on Friday, December 11, 2020.

Herbert grew up in Livingston, NJ. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Joyce (Weber) Mitschele; his brother, Lyle Mitschele; his sisters-in-law, Helene McGovern and Betty Weber; his children, Clinton Mitschele and his partner, Sheryl; Cheryl Eichmann and her husband, Paul; Louis Mitschele and his wife, Carol; Patricia Beaumont and her husband, Paul; and Lisa Campbell and her husband, Edward; and 33 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughters, Virginia Mitschele and Mary Evans, his sons, Herbert J. Mitschele III and Michael Mitschele, and his great-grandchild, Caleb Joseph.

Maureen A. Pizzi (née McKenna), age 89, ofLivingston, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2020.

Maureen was born in Irvington, New Jersey. She had resided in Livingston for 63 years, where she raised her family and was active with St. Philomena’s Parish and School.

She brought joy to everyone she met, welcoming them into her home throughout the years. She enjoyed being surrounded by family and spent many summers at the Jersey Shore, where everyone was invited, no matter how big her family grew.

Maureen was predeceased by the love of her life and husband, “Her-Man” J. Pizzi. She is survived by her devoted children, Joanne (Steven) Jones, Dr. James (Leslie) Pizzi, Janet Duchene, Jacalyn (Alan) Dorflaufer and Jill (David) McLaughlin; and her loving grandchildren, Courtney, Jaclyn (Matthew), Alexandra, Christina (Mark), Scott, Brian, Brady, Kylie, Shane, Brandon, and Zachary.

Livingston Philanthropies Inc. (LPI) founder and director Jeff Friedman has put out a request to readers to participate in the Livingston-based charity’s “Personal Shopping and Shipping to the Homeless” initiative.
“On behalf of LPI and the other fine Livingston service organizations gracing our town, I am respectfully asking our ever-generous residents to consider keeping a portion of their holiday giving local this year,” Friedman said. “Keeping your giving local – within Essex County, for example – is worth serious consideration, especially this year during the ongoing pandemic. COVID-19 continues to be particularly punishing to those living out on the streets or in shelters just a few miles down the road from Livingston.”

The Livingston Township Council introduced the final proposed ordinance of 2020 and kept open several hearings at its Monday, December 7, meeting. It may be viewed on the Livingston Township, NJ Facebook page.

At the start of the meeting, the Council held the second of two Community Development Block Grant hearings, which invite the public to offer ideas for grant proposals, which would be presented to the Essex County Division of Housing and Urban Development. For Livingston to qualify, the grants would have to involve aid for seniors or improving ADA accessibility in town. Last year, the township requested an additional bus. Applications for 2021 are due on January 8. There were no comments, and the hearing was closed.

The Livingston Board of Education approved the appointments of Livingston High School principal Mark Stern as assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction and innovation, and of Daniel Garcia as principal of Harrison School, at its meeting on December 7. Other personnel and business items were also approved.

Stern Will Be Acting Principal

Stern will officially begin in his new role as assistant superintendent on January 1, 2021. However, until a new principal is hired, his primary focus will remain at Livingston High School, serving as acting principal until a “thorough and thoughtful transition” can take place, according to a release from the district. The search for a new LHS principal will begin in the coming weeks.

While the township’s agreement with Fair Share Housing Center (FSHC), which sets the amount of affordable housing needed in each municipality, had not yet been made public, a notice appearing in this edition of the Tribune, citing an upcoming meeting, has revealed certain details of the proposed agreement.

The Township Council reached an agreement at a special meeting in early December, but there have been no updates since. The agreement, and all of the included exhibits, is expected to become available to the public today, Thursday, December 10.

The Camuso Holiday Display opened for the season on Monday evening, December 7. The display, a beloved holiday tradition, will remain open to the public, weather permitting, through January 2. Lights typically will be turned on at 5 p.m. and remain on until 9 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, and unti110 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
