Offer Funeral Mass For Herman Pizzi

Herman J. Pizzi, age 84, died at his home on Tuesday, December 23. A funeral Mass was offered on Monday, December 29, at Saint Philomena's Church in Livingston. Mr. Pizzi was born February 5, 1930 in Newark. He was graduated from Irvington High School, where he was a star athlete. He was later inducted into the Irvington High School Hall of Fame. A Marine Corps veteran from 1951 to 1953 during the Korean War, Mr. Pizzi was the Fire Team Leader of Company H, Third Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. He earned a Silver Star, Gold Star, Bronze Star, a Purple Heart, United Nations Service Medal, and a Letter of Commendation with a Combat V for Valor. After he returned from duty, he earned a BS degree from Seton Hall University. Mr. Pizzi was an executive vice president of sales for Schiffenhaus Packaging Corporation in Newark, until his retirement in 1995. Known as "coach" to many on the fields of Livingston Little League and Livingston Jr Football, he had a positive influence on many of Livingston's youth. He was also a member of Essex County Country Club, where he served on the Board of Trustees, and served as chairman of numerous committees. In addition, he was also an active member of St Philomena's Church. Predeceased by his brother, Richard Pizzi, Mr. Pizzi is survived by his wife of 60 years, Maureen; and his children, Joanne and Steven Jones; James and Leslie Pizzi; Janet Pizzi-Duchene; Jacalyn and Alan Dorflaufer; and Jill and David McLaughlin; and his sister, Carol Foselliand, and 11 grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Mr. Pizzi to the Semper Fi Fund. ...
