We're Thinking Spring!

After a winter of biting cold and more than 53 inches of snow, everyone is ready for spring, with its moderating temperatures and its blossoms awakening from a frigid winter's rest. While the offi cial start of spring is still just about a weekaway, spring events are beginning to sprout up. Think spring cleaning. Take advantage of the township's fi rst electronics recycling and paper shredding event of 2015, which is scheduled for Sunday, March 22, at the Hillside Avenue community center from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The township’s goal in sponsoring recycling events as part of the Livingston Living Green Initiative is to ensure that recyclable items do not go into the waste stream. This benefi ts the community by reducing the total weight of solid waste collection going to the incinerator or landfi ll. In turn, this reduces the total spent on garbage disposal fees, and it can increase the amount the township receives in grant dollars for recycling. These funds can then be used for recycling activities in Livingston. Since the inception of the program in 2007, more than 600 tons of electronics have been recycled, and more than 110 tons of confi dential records have been shredded. It's a win-win situation all around. What a wonderful way to celebrate spring and the coming of Earth Day.
