Robert I. Schachtel of Morris Township, formerly of Maplewood and Livingston, died Saturday, October 31. Funeral arrangements were by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel in Livingston. The family sat Shiva at the home of Nancy and Steven Pokotilow in Livingston. Mr. Schachtel was the owner and proprietor of Muriel's Department Store in Orange for the past 50 years. Prior to that, he was an executive with the Schachtel Baker in Newark, which was his family's business. He was a former board member and membership chairman of Mountain Ridge Country Club, and a member of the New Jersey Senior Golf Association. Mr. Schachtel was the husband of Lana Schachtel and the father of Jamie and Debbi Schachtel and Dr. Blair and Amy Schachtel. He is also survived by his brother, Dr.Norman Schachtel; his sister-in-law, Judy Schachtel; his sister, Hortense Sarot; his nephew, John Millman; and five grandchildren. The family has noted that memorial donations may be made to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, in honor of Mr. Schachtel's great-niece, Jordyn Heyderman.
