Mass Offered Monday For John J. Grob Jr.

John J. Grob Jr., 85, died Friday, November 6, at his residence in Livingston. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Monday, November 9, at St. Philomena Church, Livingston. A committal service followed at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover, with arrangements by Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home. Mr. Grob was born in 1929 in Kearny to John J. Grob Sr. and Rose (Bowles) Grob and grew up in South Orange. He was graduated from Seton Hall Prep and Stevens Institute of Technology with a degree in mechanical engineering. Mr. Grob followed in his father's footsteps and joined Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc. in 1946, while still in high school. He became a full-time employee in 1951. Later that year, he took a leave of absence to serve four years in the U.S. Navy Civil Engineer Corps, serving at the Pentagon. He returned to Con Edison in 1955, and held various managerial positions, eventually being appointed chief mechanical engineer. In 1962, Mr. Grob was a member of the start-up crew for Con Edison's Indian Point Unit No. 1, the first commercial nuclear power plant to be granted a construction permit by the Atomic Energy Commission. He was recognized internationally as an expert in the field of atomic energy. He retired in 1991 as senior vice president and chief technical officer for Con Edison and spent time taking courses at local schools and volunteering his time to those in need. Mr. Grob met his wife, the former Adele Morang, in Vailsburg. They married in 1953 and moved to Livingston in 1959. He is survived by children, Delia and her husband, John O'Donnell; Alanna Grob; John J. Grob III; Frances (Fay) and her husband, Bruce Horlacher; and Thomas Grob; and one grandchild.
