Dorothy Panzer Kurzweil

On Monday, November 14, 2016, Dorothy Panzer Kurzweil, of Livingston, New Jersey passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones. Born in Newark, New Jersey to the late Belle and Benjamin Panzer and stepfather Morris Magenheim, she was the beloved wife of predeceased Milburn S. Kurzweil; sister to her beloved siblings, Hy and Irving Panzer, Irving and Herbert Magenheim, and Lillian Sylvin; devoted mother of Brett Kurzweil of Garfield, New Jersey, Drew Kurzweil of New Orleans, Louisiana, Ross Kurzweil of New York, New York (Nancy Chin), and Shawn Kurzweil of Livingston, New Jersey (Adam Abelew); and loving grandmother of Danielle Kurzweil, Madeline and Sophie Abelew. Mrs. Kurzweil spent the first part of her life as a devoted homemaker, using unconditional love to raise her four children. She was involved in Cub Scouts, LEADA, ORT, Bnai Brith and Sisterhood of Temple Beth Shalom for many years. In 1983, she decided to pursue her second career and entered Kean College, where she received her BSW, and then earned her MSW from New York University (NYU) in 1990. She then began her remarkable career as a clinical social worker at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey. While there, she provided endless support to mothers and fathers, initially in pediatrics, the NICU and ultimately, maternal child care for over two decades. During this time, a second family flourished with all her well-respected Saint Barnabas colleagues. She ran a perinatal bereavement group, and guided over a thousand mothers and fathers through the tragic road of loss. Mrs. Kurzweil was a member of the National Association of Social Workers and Perinatal Social Workers. As an example of Mrs. Kurzweil’s remarkable character, she requested that in lieu of flowers, gifts or donations, she asked that people hug a loved one and hope for peace. If people are insistent on making monetary donations in her memory, they may be made to the National Stroke Association at www.stroke.org. ...
