Herbert Richard Andlauer, 91, peacefully passed away on Sunday, November 5, 2017 while residing at Merry Heart Assisted Living facility in Succasunna, New Jersey. Born, January 30, 1926 in Newark, New Jersey to Frederick Charles and Anna Marie (Lowenberg) Andlauer, he was the third of four children; his brothers, Frederick and Edgar, and sister Lois Albertine predeceased him. Raised in Newark, he graduated from Central High School. He then entered the Navy serving 1944 through 1946 operating in the Pacific, receiving the American Theatre Medal, Victory Medal and Asiatic Pacific Medal. Once discharged, he continued his education at Montclair State Teachers College obtaining his Bachelor’s and his Master’s degrees from that institution. He went on to receive his Doctorate in Education from Rutgers University. Herb’s accomplished educational career began in the Norwood, New Jersey school district as a grade school teacher. He then continued for 36 years in the Livingston school system as Principal of Collins Elementary School ,and in the Livingston Schools administration system, first as the Director of Curriculum, and finally rising to the position of Assistant Superintendent. Near his retirement he returned to being Principal; he always loved being around people and, especially, talking to and learning from children. Herb was a long time active member of NEA, NJEA, NJREA, ECEA, ECREA and OCREA. He served as president of the Essex County Educational Association and later, the Essex County Retired Educators Association, where he also served for many years as Treasurer. Herb also served on the NJEA Affiliations Committee, chaired the state NJREA Affiliations Committee, and was a Regional Coordinator of the NJREA Government Relations Committee. Upon retiring in 1992 he became very active in the Ocean County Retired Educators Association, serving for many years as Vice President and also as its Member Benefits Chair. Herb's influence on the educational community has been far-reaching. He was a genuine advocate for children and free public education and a vehement supporter of educators. From teacher to Acting Superintendent of the Livingston School District, to instructor at Kean University, Herb has educated and inspired many members of the education profession. Upon his retirement, he and his wife Lois moved to Toms River, where he enjoyed gardening, woodworking, cooking, and extensive travel.
