Robert A. Gerber

Robert A. Gerber passed away surrounded by loved ones on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Morristown Memorial Hospital after a short illness. He was 92. Born in Reinach, Switzerland, Robert immigrated to the U.S. in 1948 and thereafter became the embodiment of the American dream. He worked hard and saved enough money to attend The Dry Cleaning Institute, which led to his opening of the current family business, North Hills Cleaners, in Livingston. To say that he was proud to become an American citizen would be an understatement. Because of his hard work, self-reliance, and determination, he loved that America provided him the opportunity to become a success story. Robert will be fondly remembered by neighboring communities for his beautiful lighted Christmas tree display, which symbolized and commemorated his many years of living in America. Robert had a larger-than-life personality. With his unmistakable Swiss accent and a constant twinkle in his eye, he enthralled everyone he met with his keen sense of humor and great storytelling skills. No party was complete without Robert playing the piano and singing his favorite songs. He certainly was one of a kind. He will be remembered by many and greatly missed by family and friends. He was predeceased by his wife, Barbara, in 1993 after 43 years of marriage. Survivors include his longtime companion, Joan Rohe; his son, Chris and his wife, Bonnie; two daughters, Diane Menke, and Susan Kalweit and her husband, Fred; seven grandchildren, Heidi, Jennifer, Scott, Lisa, Laura, Christian, and Robi; two greatgranddaughters, Cameron and Charlotte; and extended family in Switzerland. Arrangements are by the Bailey Funeral Home, 8 Hilltop Road, Mendham, NJ 07945, (973) 543- 4720, www.baileyfuneral.com Visitation will be at the funeral home on Friday, January 26, 2018 from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.
