Holocaust Survivor, Solomon Frankel, Dies

Solomon Joseph Frankel, formerly of Livingston, died on February 19 in Davenport, Florida. Born in Lodz, Poland in 1925 to Benjamin Frankel and Ida (Midlarz) Frankel, he and his family were part of the last deportation of Jews to Auschwitz in 1944. His mother died in the gas chamber and sister, Sara, died of typhus at Stutthof concentration camp. As electrical workers, Mr. Frankel and his father were sent to Friedland, a work camp that was part of Gross-Rosen concentration camp. The camp was liberated in 1945, and the two men lived in Feldafing, a displaced persons camp in Germany, until 1951, when they were able to secure passage to the United States. They settled in Newark and set up a radio and TV repair shop. Mr. Frankel took classes at Newark College of Engineering (now NJIT) and later established Frankel Electric Contracting, Mr. Frankel was deeply committed to Holocaust education and spoke in many schools around the country. He is survived by his daughters, Monica (Henry) Friess and Ilene (John) Reid, and by four grandchildren. Arrangements are by the Bachman, Kulik & Reinsmith Funeral Home in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
