A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Church in Short Hills on Saturday, March 24, for Dr. Alfred William Helwig II, 66, who died on March 20. Born in Orange, Dr. Helwig lived in Livingston for much of his early life. He attended Saint Benedict’s Prep High School and Georgetown University. Valedictorian of his class at the University of the Philippines (Manila) College of Medicine, he practiced gastroenterology and internal medicine in Millburn for over 30 years. Dr. Helwig is survived by his mother, Anna Helwig (neé McKinley); his wife, Penny Helwig (neéVolpe); his children, Jonathan (Kaitlyn) and Chase; and his brothers, Gregory, Noel, Robert, and Kyle.
