Livingston Philanthropies Needs Volunteers

Livingston Philanthropies, Inc. (LPI) is in dire need of volunteers who own an SUV or larger vehicle, announced founder and director Jeff Friedman. “Livingston residents have been so generous with their donations this year that we almost can’t keep up,” he said. “It’s a good problem to have, but it is a problem. We are really in need of volunteers to pick up coats and toiletries from our collection points – primarily the West Essex Tribune, next to ShopRite. It’s not a big time commitment, but we do need someone with a big vehicle, like an SUV or a pick-up truck, that can fit all these donations. We need help collecting them, and also with taking them to our distribution partners.” To help motivate potential volunteers, Friedman said, “I researched why people volunteer and found meaningful reasons in an online article by Positive Force Consulting. Here are some: “Volunteering allows the chance to expand your horizons and celebrate other cultures. “Volunteering sets a good example for others. Lots of folks ‘talk the talk.’ But very few actually make the time and effort to ‘walk the walk.’ “There could be a personal tie to the cause. A particular cause calls to you because you, or someone close to you, have personally experienced the hardship the cause is aiming to minimize or eradicate. •Perhaps you are out of work and looking for something to bide your time and keep your resumé fresh. “Meeting like-minded, motivated, positive people is super easy. The way people choose to spend their spare time is a true reflection of their values and priorities. “ ‘Doing good’ is important. Every day we are bombarded with disheartening news stories. Volunteering presents a proactive way of doing something to make the world a better place. Even the smallest gestures make a difference. “Volunteering creates empowerment. Maybe someone offered you a helping hand when you were down and out. Volunteering gives you the opportunity to pay that favor forward. “Volunteering gives greater perspective and self-awareness. Depending on the cause, it is possible you will come face to face with some pretty heart-wrenching situations. “Volunteering is good for you. Studies show that volunteering releases tension.
