Cycle for Survival

At the latest Township Council meeting, we were also thrilled to hear about an exciting new Cycle for Survival event coming to Livingston in the spring of 2022.The outdoor event would take place in the Haines Memorial Pool parking lot, next to the high school, during the weekend of May 14 and 15. It would feature 215 stationary bikes under a 100 by 200-foot tent on the lot. There would also be an audio setup involved. While the Council gave organizers permission to proceed with planning, some of these details may change in the coming months.Cycle for Survival was founded by Livingston’s own Jennifer Goodman Linn and her husband, Dave Linn, in 2007. The stationary cycling event, which Jennifer originally hoped would generate $20,000 or $30,000 for “orphan cancers,” has raised $268 million to fund research and clinical trials led by Memorial Sloan Kettering. While she lost her battle to sarcoma, Jennifer’s legacy of ensuring better outcomes for everyone with cancer lives on through Cycle for Survival. Her parents, Livingston residents Sandy and Len Goodman, have given their full support to the Livingston outdoor event. We do echo concerns raised by the Council about excessive noise for neighbors during the early morning hours. Perhaps the start time could be shifted to the late morning to make it less intrusive. But while this is an issue that needs to be addressed, with some minor accommodations, it should certainly be manageable.Jennifer Goodman Linn is a concrete example of how one person truly can change the world. Her efforts have grown into something she likely never envisioned when she got on a stationary bike for the first Cycle for Survival fundraiser. It brings us true joy to see such a great event coming to Livingston, which has such strong ties to the cause due to both the Goodman family and the hundreds of residents who have participated in Cycle events through the years as a result.
