Food, clothing, toiletries and other necessities poured in to the collection center behind Town Hall on Monday afternoon during the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service that was carried out by the Livingston Committee for Diversity and Inclusion (LCDI).In the morning, Simone Anthony-Brown led a youth-centered virtual activity to reflect on Dr. King and his message. She shared a book about the involvement of children in the civil rights movement in 1963 Birmingham, Alabama, and an art project highlighting Dr. King and his words. Both the reading and artwork can be viewed on the LCDI Facebook page, at https://www.facebook.com/ LCDINJ.An anti-bullying poster contest was held by the Livingston Police Department, and the LivingstonLeague of Women Voters helped eligible individuals register to vote.Organizations participating in the collections at Town Hall included Livingston Neighbors Helping Neighbors, the Livingston Kiwanis Club, the Livingston Lions Club, the YMCA, the Young Men Service League of Livingston, the Girl Scouts, the Livingston chapter of the National Charity League, the Livingston Chinese Association, and the Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest.Among the donated goods were trays of baked ziti, many inspired by an instructional video provided by Matthew Smith. A link to the young chef’s video, as well as the recipe, can also be found on the LCDI Facebook page.Alyse Heilpern and Saba Khan, co-chairwomen of the LCDI, worked with Simone Anthony-Brown, Paul Boxer, Nalit Patel, Larry Bergman, Ava Reinfeld, and Steve Delman to plan the event.Dee Dee Pulver, Billy Fine and Asha Samat assisted during the service day.“Despite the cold, inclement weather and COVID, our entire community – the organizations who participated, and all those who donated – came together to honor Dr. King’s memory,” said Heilpern.
