The Livingston High School wrestling team competed at the NJSIAA District XI Wrestling Tournament the weekend of February 18 and 19 at Morristown High School, taking first place; and this past weekend, competed in the Region 3 Tournament at West Orange High School. There, five Lancers qualifed for the State Tournament, to be held next weekend in Atlantic City.In addition, head coach Dan Brill was named Coach of the Year at both the District XI and the Region 3 Tournaments.District XI TournamentAt the District XI Tournament, the Lancers earned team title honors and won their first district title as a team since 2011. “As the coaching staff told the kids, this is another mark they’re leaving behind with their legacy,” noted head coach Dan Brill.Along with the team championship trophy, the Lancers had a lot of individual successes. Livingston senior “big men” Max Lee, Stratos Kantanas, Vinny Militello, and Eddie Padilla each won their respective brackets. “These four have been an absolute force for the Lancers all year in the upper weights, as they occupy 165 pounds, 175 pounds, 190 pounds, and 215 pounds, respectively,” said coach Brill. “The senior leadership up top has been big for us all year. They have been absolute work horses for us, and many teams have trouble matching it. Not only are they good wrestlers, but they are extraordinary people. I am really happy for them to earn these titles.”Other Lancers who won medals at the District XI Tournament were second place finishers Aidan Carmody (106 pounds) and Shaun Quirk (126 pounds), and third place finishers Jason Quirk (120 pounds), Phenol Morlan (138 pounds), Zack Vera (150 pounds), and Rory Subarsky (157 pounds). By placing in the top three, these wrestlers have qualified for the NJSIAA Region 3 Tournament.Coach of the YearAlong with the abundance of trophies, medals, and brackets earned by the Livingston Lancers, coach Brill was named District XI Coach of the Year. “I truly look at this as a team achievement,” said Brill. “Let’s face it, without such a special team, I probably don’t win this award. What they were able to accomplish this year made this even possible, so I believe it is just another testament to the hard work and selflessness they’ve demonstrated.
